{"id":6938,"date":"2020-09-15T18:46:13","date_gmt":"2020-09-15T22:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/glossen\/?p=6938"},"modified":"2021-12-05T13:45:44","modified_gmt":"2021-12-05T18:45:44","slug":"george-floyd-from-berlin-to-bavaria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/glossen\/2020\/09\/15\/george-floyd-from-berlin-to-bavaria\/","title":{"rendered":"George Floyd from Berlin to Bavaria"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><\/h1>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>George Floyd from Berlin to Bavaria<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>by Anna Rosmus<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On May\u00a025, 2020, when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Floyd\">George Floyd<\/a>, a 46-year-old African American, purchased cigarettes at a Minneapolis grocery store, an employee believed he had paid with a counterfeit $20 bill.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> After the 6\u20194\u201d\u00a0(193\u00a0cm) suspect <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Killing_of_George_Floyd\">was killed<\/a> during a police arrest,<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> videos made by witnesses and security cameras became public. They showed a white police officer kneeling on Floyd\u2019s neck for nearly nine minutes. All four officers were fired, and criminally charged. Two autopsies declared Floyd&#8217;s death to be a homicide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That triggered not only protests against police brutality, racism, and a lack of police accountability in the United States, but all over the world makeshift memorials seemed to spring up.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> Germans began to show their solidarity, too. Chancellor Angela Merkel called the killing a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-minneapolis-police-protests-merkel-idUSKBN23B2Y8\">very, very terrible thing<\/a>,&#8221; also condemning racism. After scoring a goal, <em>Borussia M<\/em><em>\u00f6<\/em><em>nchengladbach<\/em> football player <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marcus_Thuram\">Marcus Thuram<\/a> took a knee and bowed his head. The name of Berlin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/berlin-24-7-does-berlin-have-racist-street-names\/a-39659559\">Mohrenstra\u00dfe<\/a> (Moors Street) subway station was spontaneously taped over to create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-53348129\">George Floyd Stra\u00dfe<\/a>. A mural depicting him was painted on a section of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berlin_Wall\">Berlin Wall<\/a>. On June 6<sup>th<\/sup>, in more than 30 cities the combined number of protest participants exceeded <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Floyd_protests_in_Germany\">100,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When US police shot at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/top-stories\/s-9097\">Deutsche Welle<\/a> crew reporting from Minneapolis in two separate incidents, and threatened with arrest in a third incident, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas demanded that &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germanys-top-diplomat-george-floyd-protests-legitimate-urges-press-freedom\/a-53657019\">journalists must be able to carry out their task<\/a>, which is independent coverage of events, without endangering their safety\u201d; adding that \u201cdemocratic states under the rule of law have to meet the highest standards when it comes to protecting freedom of press.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prompted by multiple inquiries, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\">Snopes<\/a> posted excerpts from an e-mail by Minneapolis Police Department <em>(MPD)<\/em> Lt. Bob Kroll to union members, where he pointed out, \u201cWhat is not being told is the violent criminal history of George Floyd.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to court records, between 1997 and 2007 police had arrested Floyd nine times, mostly on drug and theft charges that resulted in months-long jail sentences.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> In 2009, he was charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in a home invasion but paroled in January 2013.<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the county\u2019s postmortem toxicology screening, performed one day after Floyd\u2019s death, the deceased was intoxicated with 11 ng\/mL of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/drug-topics\/fentanyl\">fentanyl<\/a>,<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> a synthetic opioid pain reliever, and 19 ng\/mL of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/publications\/research-reports\/methamphetamine\/what-methamphetamine\">methamphetamines<\/a> (as well as other substances).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 22.7459%;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 54.5081%; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/glossen\/files\/2020\/10\/Benedictine-Metten.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6939\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/glossen\/files\/2020\/10\/Benedictine-Metten-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"616\" height=\"462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/glossen\/files\/2020\/10\/Benedictine-Metten-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/glossen\/files\/2020\/10\/Benedictine-Metten.jpg 628w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Benedictine Metten Library in the Deggendorf district, courtesy of Gary Heatherly<\/span><a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">[8]<\/span><\/strong><\/sup><\/a><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 22.7459%;\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Back in Southern Germany, George Floyd made more headlines in an idyllic municipality called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markt-metten.de\">Metten<\/a>. It is not only located on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, but in some ways, crime-related data like those above seem almost a world away. Best known for its baroque Benedictine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/baroque-library-metten-abbey\">abbey<\/a>, Metten has some 4,200 residents, many of them are\/were educated at its humanistic secondary school.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While racism is not completely new there, the earliest encounters with any African Americans that locals recall occurred in 1945, at the end of World War II, when General George Patton Jr.\u2019s tanks came rolling down, between the Danube River and the border to Czechoslovakia. During the subsequent occupation, alcohol and fraternizing with white women posed temptations for some men. In 2011, when US-veterans of the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Army and their relatives visited Metten Abbey, Father Norbert offered them a tour, and told them about the surrender of the Hungarian Generals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Five years later, the largest refugee crisis since World War II created wide-spread panic.<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> By late February 2016, in Bavaria alone, more than 130,000 people were waiting for the <em>Bundesamt f\u00fcr Migration und Fl\u00fcchtlinge (BAMF) <\/em>to recognize their refugee status. In April, when the number of new arrivals sharply receded, the government of Lower Bavaria announced that only six of the 24 temporary refugee housings in the district would remain open; one was Metten. The Abbey tackled racism head-on. In October 2018, for example, its 9<sup>th <\/sup>graders met African-German filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mo_Asumang\">Mo Asumang<\/a>, who confronts racism and anti-semitism.<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then, in the summer of 2020, a new resident of this quaint community proposed that the market council adds the name of George Floyd to a pool for potential street names. Dutifully, Mayor Moser invited the gentleman in his mid-70s to the Metten town hall. According to a <em>Bayerischer Rundfunk<\/em> report, that cosmopolitan \u201cwar schon in aller Welt zu Hause. In Papua-Neuguinea machte er Erfahrungen mit Rassismus. Seine mittlerweile verstorbene Frau wurde von Australiern angefeindet. Deshalb hatte ihn das Schicksal von George Floyd besonders ber\u00fchrt\u201d (has already been at home in the entire world. In Papua New Guinea, he experienced racism. His wife, meanwhile deceased, was ostracized by Australians. That\u2019s why the fate of George Floyd touched him in particular.)<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> The Metten Community Council unanimously accepted the resident\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Online, at <em>Bayerischer Rundfunk<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.br.de\/nachrichten\/\">BR 24<\/a><em>,<\/em> the Metten proposal was discussed, too. One of the commentators wrote, \u201cWenn 1. April w\u00e4re, k\u00f6nnte ich diese Meldung entsprechend einsch\u00e4tzen.\u201d (If it were April 1<sup>st<\/sup>, I could assess this report accordingly.)<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a> On July 9<sup>th<\/sup>, a different request was made. It should not be ignored that Floyd \u201ceine kriminelle Karriere hatte. Von 1997 bis 2007\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(had a criminal career. From 1997 until 2007\u2026) adding that,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Will man als Gemeinde seine ablehnende Haltung gegen\u00fcber dem Rassismus zum Ausdruck bringen, gibt es sicher andere M\u00f6glichkeiten. Wenn es unbedingt ein Stra\u00dfenname sein sollte, dann besser nach einer Begebenheit im regionalen Umfeld suchen.\u201d (If as a community one wants to express one\u2019s objection toward racism, there are certainly other options. If absolutely it should be a street name, then better search for an occurrence in the regional surroundings).<a href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Four weeks later, a unanimous vote voided the Council\u2019s previous decision. Renaming an existing street was not only deemed too laborious and too expensive, but in the future only persons with a connection to Metten will be considered, and only those not criminally sentenced in a democracy, where law and order rule.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On August 5<sup>th<\/sup>, the Deggendorf edition of the <em>Passauer Neue Presse<\/em> headlined, \u201cGemeinderat doch gegen George-Floyd- Stra\u00dfe\u201d (Community Council against George-Floyd-Street after all). In hindsight, Mayor Moser conceded, it would have been \u201celeganter\u201d (more elegant) to reject the proposal right away.
