As a formerly enslaved person later known for his literature and orations focusing on equal rights for Black Americans, Douglass offered numerous insights regarding race relations in America. Throughout the Reconstruction Era, as some in the politically reunified country attempted to reconcile the horrific cost of slavery on human lives, Douglass asserted himself as a scholar on the topics of enslavement and the prejudice that came from it. His position in American politics and his autobiographical experiences further contextualized his authorship of \u201cThe Color Line\u201d in 1881, including his life as an enslaved man, his complicated relationship with Abraham Lincoln, and his various political roles in the 1870s. Douglass\u2019 article offered an opening in which the impact of slavery was philosophically analyzed through the lens of its past and its anticipated future in the (Re)united States of America. &#8220;The Color Line&#8221; could be used today to view Douglass\u2019 life through sociological and philosophical lenses in a work that is shorter than his autobiographies, but just as impactful.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4070\" style=\"width: 183px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/jstor-25100970 \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4070\" class=\"wp-image-4070\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2021\/12\/Color-Line-Image-e1639364369505.jpg\" alt=\"Article First Page\" width=\"173\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4070\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">First Page of &#8220;The Color Line,&#8221; courtesy of Internet Archive<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe Color Line\u201d was published in 1881 in <a href=\"https:\/\/northamericanreview.org\/\"><em>The North American Review<\/em><\/a>, the oldest literary magazine in the United States.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> The article was eleven pages in length and was presented as an informative text about how the color line came to be and why it was persistent in American society. As presented by Douglass throughout his article, the color line described the social division between Black people and White people in America. This division was created by slavery and continued through the introduction of divisive legislation by Southern state governments, such as poll taxes, literacy tests, and grandfather clauses in the years following the implementation of the 15<sup>th<\/sup> Amendment.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> In Northern states, the color line was more evident socially in the \u201cwidely divergent spheres\u201d of the two races.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a> As a phenomenon that was both old (in the relationship between slaveholders and those enslaved) and new (as a sociolegal development after the Reconstruction Amendments), the color line was an important issue for Douglass to discuss in his article.<\/p>\n<p>In the opening paragraph of \u201cThe Color Line,\u201d Douglass discussed the nature of prejudice in society and its lasting impact on those it oppressed. He claimed that \u201cfew evils\u201d were as rigid as \u201clong-standing prejudice,\u201d which he argued was a \u201cmoral disorder,\u201d that became stronger as it denied arguments against it, especially as it created new, ugly images of Black people in society. Douglass further claimed that it was easy for people \u201cto see repulsive qualities in those we despise and hate,\u201d as prejudice added a new tint to the lenses of oppressors\u2019 vision.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a> In the remainder of the article, Douglass discussed the origins of prejudice in slavery, its effects on the Black race, and its persistence in society. After the first paragraph, he discussed the existence of prejudice in historical England. He claimed that prejudice has existed elsewhere in other forms, but \u201cof all the races and varieties of men which have suffered from this feeling, the colored people of this country have endured the most.\u201d Douglass further argued that prejudice was \u201cunreasoning,\u201d and it made the Black man \u201cthe slave of society\u201d even after slavery was abolished in America in 1865.<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4084\" style=\"width: 239px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frdo\/learn\/historyculture\/frederickdouglass.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4084\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4084\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2021\/12\/Young-Portrait_2-229x300.jpg\" alt=\"Douglass Portrait Young\" width=\"229\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2021\/12\/Young-Portrait_2-229x300.jpg 229w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2021\/12\/Young-Portrait_2.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4084\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Portrait of Douglass as a Young Man, courtesy of National Park Service<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Even though some claimed that prejudice was \u201cnatural, instinctive, and invincible\u201d in society, Douglass argued that if this were true, then it would have been true universally.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a> He claimed that there was \u201cno color prejudice in Europe,\u201d which discredited his first and second caveats of prejudice, and he further argued that most prejudices in America came from the guilt of White people, as they found it easier to oppress those they had harmed, rather than to make reparations for their actions.<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a> Additionally, since White people in the South were economically interested in keeping Black people enslaved, they continued to oppress and belittle them. \u201cOut of slavery has come this prejudice and this color line,\u201d Douglass asserted in his article.<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a> After he established the origins of the American color line, Douglass claimed that the prejudice in society could not be attributed to merely the color of one\u2019s skin\u2014there must have been an association of skin color with undesirable conditions, such as \u201cslavery, ignorance, stupidity, servility, poverty, [and] dependence.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\">[10]<\/a> Douglass claimed that this color line must have been man-made, for it was too inconsistent to be natural. One example of this inconsistency was the way White men feared the rise of the Black race, yet they claimed Black people were \u201coriginally and permanently inferior.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\">[11]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In his closing paragraph, Douglass asserted his belief in great men to overcome the effects of prejudice. \u201cMen who are really great,\u201d he wrote, \u201care too great to be small,\u201d and he included Abraham Lincoln amongst others in his subsequent list of great men he knew.<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\">[12]<\/a> In an optimistic outlook, Douglass stated that \u201cthe number of those who rise superior to prejudice is great and increasing,&#8221; but he still envisioned a nation in which all people \u201crespect[ed] the rights and dignity\u201d of each other. As seen in his first paragraph, he ultimately knew that prejudice would be difficult to rid the country of.<a href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\">[13]<\/a> The descriptions of discrimination in \u201cThe Color Line\u201d were likely an attempted appeal to members of the public who supported the abolition of slavery during the Civil War, as it would have been in their ability to perhaps open the eyes of those who denounced equal rights. Additionally, when he wrote this article, Douglass was focused on an updated version of his autobiography, which may have contributed to his philosophical views regarding experiences with prejudice.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4073\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frdo\/learn\/historyculture\/frederickdouglass.htm \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4073\" class=\"wp-image-4073\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2021\/12\/Douglass-House-New-Bedford-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"Douglass house\" width=\"212\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Douglass&#8217; First Place of Residence in New Bedford, courtesy of National Park Service<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Douglass was born in the Eastern Shore region of Maryland in 1818 as an enslaved man, and at the age of eight, he was hired out by his master and relocated to Baltimore, where he taught himself how to read and write. At the age of fifteen, he was sent back to the Eastern Shore, where he taught other enslaved people and eventually attempted to escape. He was then returned to Baltimore where he met Anna Murray, a free Black woman. Murray helped Douglass escape by providing him with money for a train ticket, which he boarded under disguise and rode to New York City, where he declared himself free. In New York, he married Anna, and they moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts after they decided it would not be safe for Douglass to live in the city as a fugitive. In Massachusetts, Douglass attended abolitionist meetings and spoke about his experiences as a slave, and he soon began to work as an agent for the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. To prevent himself from being captured and enslaved again, Douglass traveled overseas to Europe where he gave speeches about emancipation and sold copies of his first autobiography. After abolitionists in Europe offered to purchase his freedom, Douglass returned to America as a free man. He and Anna relocated to Rochester, New York, where he started a newspaper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/The-North-Star-American-newspaper\"><em>The North Star<\/em><\/a>.<a href=\"#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\">[14]<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4071\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/storyoftheweek.loa.org\/2013\/02\/reminiscences-of-abraham-lincoln.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4071\" class=\"wp-image-4071 \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2021\/12\/Douglass-and-Lincoln-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"Lincoln and Douglass\" width=\"251\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4071\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lincoln and Douglass Meet During the Civil War, courtesy of Library of Congress<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When the Civil War began in 1861, Douglass worked to ensure that emancipation would be a result. He continued to speak about his experiences, and he even denounced President Abraham Lincoln\u2019s inaction on slavery at the beginning of the war.<a href=\"#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\">[15]<\/a> After the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/exhibits\/featured-documents\/emancipation-proclamation\/transcript.html\">Emancipation Proclamation<\/a> was presented on January 1, 1863, Douglass worked to recruit Black soldiers to join the war effort. He believed that serving in the army would guarantee them citizenship after the war ended.<a href=\"#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\">[16]<\/a> During the war, Douglass also met with Lincoln to advocate on the behalf of Black soldiers who were not receiving equal treatment to White soldiers.<a href=\"#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\">[17]<\/a> The relationship between Douglass and Lincoln was historically complicated, as the orator was oftentimes frustrated with the president, but eventually praised his character and decision-making. This was particularly evident in \u201cThe Color Line,\u201d when Douglass mentioned him as a man \u201ctoo great to be small.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\">[18]<\/a> Douglass\u2019 work during the Civil War exhibited his desire for Black representation and equality in the nation, and it additionally helped him gain standing in the Republican Party, which he became closely aligned with in the following years.<a href=\"#_ftn19\" name=\"_ftnref19\">[19]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1872, the Douglass family moved to Washington D.C. where Frederick held several office positions before the election of President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876, \u201cincluding assistant secretary of the Santo Domingo Commission, legislative council member of the D.C. Territorial Government, board member of Howard University, and president of the Freedman\u2019s Bank.\u201d Later, between 1877 and 1891, Douglass served under five presidents at three different positions.<a href=\"#_ftn20\" name=\"_ftnref20\">[20]<\/a> After serving as the U.S. Marshall for Washington D.C. under President Hayes from 1877 until the change of administration in 1881, Douglass was appointed as the Recorder of Deeds for Washington D.C. under President James A. Garfield.<a href=\"#_ftn21\" name=\"_ftnref21\">[21]<\/a> This less-involved position frustrated Douglass, which could have contributed to his thoughts on the prejudice he saw and felt as a Black politician in America. Throughout his political career, Douglass aligned himself with the Republican Party, although he presented his ideas during and after the Civil War as typically radical.<a href=\"#_ftn22\" name=\"_ftnref22\">[22]<\/a> It was during these years in his political career that Douglass published \u201cThe Color Line.\u201d Additionally, over the course of his life, Douglass produced three autobiographies: <em>Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass<\/em> in 1845, <em>My Bondage My Freedom<\/em> in 1855, and <em>Life and Times <\/em>in 1881.<a href=\"#_ftn23\" name=\"_ftnref23\">[23]<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4075\" style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sharetngov.tnsosfiles.com\/tsla\/exhibits\/aale\/jimcrow.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4075\" class=\"wp-image-4075 \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2021\/12\/Voting-Terrorizing-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"White men threatening Black voter\" width=\"278\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Terrorizing a Black Voter at the Ballot Box, courtesy of Tennessee State Library and Archives<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When \u201cThe Color Line\u201d was published in 1881, Black people were beginning to experience the oppression and racism of the Jim Crow Era in the American South.<a href=\"#_ftn24\" name=\"_ftnref24\">[24]<\/a> The <a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/learn\/educational-resources\/historical-documents\/the-reconstruction-amendments\">Reconstruction Amendments<\/a>\u2014including the 13<sup>th<\/sup> in 1865, the 14<sup>th<\/sup> in 1868, and the 15<sup>th<\/sup> in 1870\u2014had appeared to offer legislative protection to those of African descent, but they were quickly circumvented by legislators repulsed by racial equality.<a href=\"#_ftn25\" name=\"_ftnref25\">[25]<\/a> Through the implementation of poll taxes, residency requirements, grandfather clauses, literacy tests, and other discriminatory regulations, Black people were largely prevented from exercising their constitutional right to vote in the South from the 1870s until the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourdocuments.gov\/doc.php?flash=false&amp;doc=100&amp;page=transcript\">Voting Rights Act of 1965<\/a>.<a href=\"#_ftn26\" name=\"_ftnref26\">[26]<\/a> During a campaign address for President Garfield in 1880, Douglass spoke about the nullification of the Reconstruction Amendments by the South, and this racist legislation was likely at the forefront of his mind when writing his article in 1881.<a href=\"#_ftn27\" name=\"_ftnref27\">[27]<\/a> In \u201cThe Color Line,\u201d Douglass presented readers with an explanation for the persistence of prejudice in society as seen in the regulations preventing the Black vote. He alerted his audience that because of the characteristics of prejudice, it could survive and thrive in post-Civil War American society for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>In the election of 1880, Douglass campaigned for Republican candidate James Garfield, but his role was less important than it had been during the two previous administrations. As \u201ca new generation of black leaders\u201d came into the political realm, Douglass was slowly pushed out.<a href=\"#_ftn28\" name=\"_ftnref28\">[28]<\/a> This new generation was mentioned in the last paragraph of Douglass\u2019 article when he referred to numbers growing of people \u201cwho rise superior to prejudice.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn29\" name=\"_ftnref29\">[29]<\/a> When Garfield was elected in 1880, Douglass hoped for another presidential appointment to a position of importance, even though internally he was only waveringly faithful to the new Administration. Instead, he received what he saw as a demotion to the Recorder of Deeds for Washington D.C., which likely left a bitter impression with prejudice on his mind. Around the publishing of \u201cThe Color Line\u201d in 1881, Douglass also completed an updated version of his autobiography titled <em>Life and Times, <\/em>in which he reflected heavily on his experiences with great men and sought to define \u201cthe theory of the American self-made man.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn30\" name=\"_ftnref30\">[30]<\/a> As Douglass reflected on his life while writing this third autobiography and \u201cThe Color Line,\u201d he must have also considered his various encounters with prejudice.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4072\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/frdo\/learn\/historyculture\/frederickdouglass.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4072\" class=\"wp-image-4072 \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2021\/12\/Douglass-as-a-Statesman-1-e1639364476629-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"Douglass as a politician\" width=\"201\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4072\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Douglass as a Politician, courtesy of Library of Congress<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Even though the Reconstruction Era ended in 1877, Douglass believed that White Americans still had to evolve in their thoughts and actions towards other races. By claiming there are \u201cfew evils\u201d that act in the same ways as prejudice, he asserted that racial discrimination was one of the worst societal diseases man could experience.<a href=\"#_ftn31\" name=\"_ftnref31\">[31]<\/a> This was perhaps the mindset of someone tired of people with the same skin color as him being treated with such hatred. This prejudice \u201crefus[ed] all contradiction,\u201d namely from Southern legislators and White supremacists, which allowed it to \u201c[distort] the features of the fancied original\u201d and render the voice of the Black man silent.<a href=\"#_ftn32\" name=\"_ftnref32\">[32]<\/a> Furthermore, because it \u201ccreate[d] the conditions necessary to its own existence,\u201d Douglass believed that prejudice would continue to affect Black lives in the future. By hating Black people for more than merely the color of their skin and associating the entire race with undesirable qualities\u2014as discussed by Douglass in the rest of his article\u2014the White race was (and will continue to be) consistently oppressive to People of Color.<a href=\"#_ftn33\" name=\"_ftnref33\">[33]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the opening paragraph of \u201cThe Color Line,\u201d Douglass described the prejudice that had taken hold of American society during and after the abolition of slavery. He claimed this prejudice would continue to affect the lives of Black people in the future, such as the implementation of discriminatory legislation following the Reconstruction Amendments that affected Black people at the ballot boxes. Douglass\u2019 multiple careers during the initial years of these Jim Crow laws further allowed him to effectively analyze the philosophy of this prejudice through his growing disappointment with American politics.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4074\" style=\"width: 264px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitmaryland.org\/listing\/attraction\/frederick-douglass-statue-talbot-county-courthouse\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4074\" class=\"wp-image-4074\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2021\/12\/Douglass-Statue-300x260.jpg\" alt=\"Douglass Statue\" width=\"254\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4074\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Douglass Statue at Talbot County Courthouse in Maryland, courtesy of Maryland Office of Tourism<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Today, \u201cThe Color Line\u201d may seem to be one of Douglass\u2019 more insignificant works, especially in the wake of his <a href=\"https:\/\/edan.si.edu\/transcription\/pdf_files\/12955.pdf\">speech in 1876<\/a> at the Emancipation Memorial in Washington D.C., proceeding his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/1908634\">reflections on the Lost Cause in 1883<\/a>, or when he published three separate autobiographies: <em>Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass<\/em> in 1845, <em>My Bondage My Freedom<\/em> in 1855, and <em>Life and Times <\/em>in 1881.<a href=\"#_ftn34\" name=\"_ftnref34\">[34]<\/a> Despite these other, more famous works by Douglass, \u201cThe Color Line\u201d can serve several purposes when analyzed fully. Although it is not directly an autobiographical work, it reflects many of Douglass\u2019 experiences as an enslaved man, a writer, an orator, an abolitionist, a war-time recruiter, and a politician. This article could therefore be used to peer into Douglass\u2019 life through sociological and philosophical lenses, especially since it is much shorter and easier to sift through than a full autobiography.
