All essays must include material from sources on the syllabus, such as the <em>American Yawp\u00a0<\/em>online textbook, properly cited with Chicago-style footnotes. Outside research is allowed but not required. Essays will be graded on depth of analysis, use of evidence, and quality of prose. Late essays will be penalized up to 5 points each day.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MailCompose\">Please choose ONE of the follow essay topics:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>Describe three of the most significant changes in American society between Reconstruction and the start of World War I, analyzing why they were important and how they were connected to industrialization.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>OR<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>Explain how industrialization affected Theodore Roosevelt&#8217;s evolving political views and compare or contrast his responses to the reactions of at least two other American figures from the period between Reconstruction and the start of World War I.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Organizational Guidelines<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em class=\"ContentPasted0\">Please open your paper with a descriptive title, byline (name), and a clear introductory paragraph with thesis statement\u00a0 \u2013and don\u2019t just restate the question.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Make sure to address a question and devise a thesis statement that can be effectively argued in a short paper.\u00a0 Consult the Methods Center handout on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2011\/08\/HANDOUT-How-to-Write-a-Thesis-Statement1.pdf\">How to Write a Thesis Statement<\/a><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><i class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0 x_ContentPasted0 ContentPasted0\">As with any essential question, make sure to define terms, consider the landscape of opinion, and demonstrate respect for complexity and change over time<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i class=\"x_ContentPasted0 ContentPasted0\">Be specific.\u00a0 Use examples, dates, statistics and snippets of quotation to support your claims.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i class=\"ContentPasted0 ContentPasted1\">All essays must include material from sources on the syllabus properly cited with Chicago-style footnotes.\u00a0 These sources include both reading assignments and the discussion pages. Outside research is allowed but not required.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><em>Make sure you are using and formatting your footnotes correctly.\u00a0 Provide footnotes for all quotations and specific information (such as statistics).
