Daley recounts,\u00a0&#8220;it was kind of scary because you know what&#8217;s good and bad and you see all the people stealing.\u00a0So,\u00a0you&#8217;re thinking, &#8220;My God, what is happening in the world?&#8221;[<span data-fontsize=\"12\">2]<\/span>\u00a0The LA Riots are an important event that is\u00a0omitted\u00a0from H.W. Brands&#8217; book,\u00a0<i>American Dreams<\/i>. Brand mentions and describes the Watts Riots\u00a0of 1965, but omits any description of the LA Riots. The omission\u00a0of\u00a0the LA Riots\u00a0and its outcome does\u00a0not\u00a0enlighten\u00a0readers\u00a0about the\u00a0continued\u00a0racial tensions\u00a0and injustices\u00a0that have occurred and continued to occur in the U.S. well after 1945.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3698\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2017\/12\/rodney-king-beating.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3698\" class=\"wp-image-3698 size-medium\" title=\"George \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2017\/12\/rodney-king-beating-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Courtesy of George Holliday\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2017\/12\/rodney-king-beating-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2017\/12\/rodney-king-beating-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2017\/12\/rodney-king-beating.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3698\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Still from Rodney King beating video<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The LA Riots were a result of the\u00a0acquittal\u00a0of four white police men who\u00a0severely\u00a0beat a black motorist, Rodney King, during\u00a0a\u00a0routine\u00a0arrest\u00a0stop.\u00a0Unbeknownst to the arresting officers, the arrest was recorded by local, George Holliday, who &#8220;sold [it] to a local television station, [which] subsequently broadcasted on television thousands of times.&#8221;[<span data-fontsize=\"12\">3]<\/span>\u00a0The video clip sparked national debate and produced many reactions.\u00a0The\u00a0police men\u00a0responsible\u00a0were indicted, but their trial was\u00a0moved\u00a0from\u00a0Los\u00a0Angeles to\u00a0Simi Valley in the Ventura County,\u00a0a &#8220;white, prosperous, suburban [neighborhood].&#8221;[<span data-fontsize=\"12\">4]<\/span>\u00a0Moving the trial gave an advantage to the police men awaiting their trial because the trial would now be held in a\u00a0community that was predominantly white, upper-class citizens.\u00a0By\u00a0the end of the trial, while\u00a0many were\u00a0angry\u00a0at\u00a0the video, they were\u00a0even more furious at\u00a0the verdict.\u00a0This erupted into\u00a0angry crowds and\u00a0mayhem; the\u00a0riots lasted from April 29<span data-fontsize=\"12\">th<\/span>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0May 4<span data-fontsize=\"12\">th<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0resulted in\u00a0&#8220;more than 50 people\u00a0killed, more than 2,300\u00a0injured,\u00a0thousands\u00a0arrested,\u00a01,100 buildings\u00a0damaged, and total property damage [at]\u00a0about $1 billion, [making]\u00a0the riots one of the most-devastating civil disruptions in American history.&#8221;[<span data-fontsize=\"12\">5]<\/span>\u00a0Many extreme measures were taken because of the severity of the riots; these measures included shutting down public transportation, cancelling schools, and deploying the California National Guard.\u00a0The LA Riots\u00a0became another symbol for racial tensions that\u00a0progressed and continue progress\u00a0in urban cities.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3703\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2017\/12\/national-guard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3703\" class=\"wp-image-3703 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2017\/12\/national-guard-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"Courtesy of J. Reginald Denny was a white truck\u00a0driver\u00a0who &#8220;was pulled from [his truck]\u00a0by several black men, kicked and knocked to the asphalt, where one of the men smashed his\u00a0skull.&#8221;[<span data-fontsize=\"12\">6]<\/span>\u00a0This,\u00a0in addition to the looting and arson, contributed to the increasing tensions and disputes.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0LA\u00a0Riots further\u00a0intensified\u00a0the racial tensions\u00a0not only\u00a0between blacks and whites, but\u00a0among\u00a0other races as well, in particular, Asian-Americans.\u00a0Many Asian-owned business were targeted for looting and destruction. Historian Shelley Lee explains that the LA Riots represented a &#8220;shattered &#8216;American Dream&#8217; and brought focus to their hold on economic mobility in a society fraught by social and ethnic tension.&#8221;[<span data-fontsize=\"12\">7]<\/span>\u00a0Many Asian-Americans looked forward to their hard-earned success with their businesses because Asian-Americans lie in the gray area between whites versus blacks.\u00a0For Daley,\u00a0being\u00a0an Asian-American during\u00a0these looting\u00a0and arson incidents of\u00a0Asian-owned businesses made\u00a0her fearful\u00a0because &#8220;what\u00a0was happening on the streets,\u00a0you don&#8217;t know if you&#8217;re going to\u00a0be the next victim. You see that these people are looting already, then\u00a0what is the next thing they are going to do?&#8221;[<span data-fontsize=\"12\">8]<\/span>\u00a0Asian-Americans were a significant part of the LA Riots and a part of racial tensions in history.\u00a0Brands&#8217; omission allows for readers to forget\u00a0the racial tension between blacks\u00a0and other races rather than just blacks and whites. The impact it had on Asian-Americans was a\u00a0saddening\u00a0thought to Daley\u00a0because\u00a0&#8220;these\u00a0Asians\u00a0worked hard to get their business up and running and they were being looted by these\u00a0bad people.&#8221;[<span data-fontsize=\"12\">9]<\/span>\u00a0 Driving down Vermont\u00a0street\u00a0(the\u00a0main street leading into\u00a0the\u00a0Asian\u00a0populated area of Los Angeles), many\u00a0storefronts\u00a0had\u00a0shattered glass\u00a0and broken structures.\u00a0Daley\u00a0recalls\u00a0witnessing\u00a0&#8220;a\u00a0lot of\u00a0people\u00a0who were carrying\u00a0appliances, like TVs, stereos and\u00a0bags and carts of goods and foods;\u00a0I saw\u00a0them coming in and out of the stores.&#8221;[<span data-fontsize=\"12\">10]<\/span>\u00a0Tensions between the\u00a0black community and the\u00a0police\u00a0had\u00a0already erupted, so while\u00a0the riots occurred\u00a0police efforts were no match for the angry\u00a0citizens.\u00a0Many\u00a0took advantage of the uprising and of &#8220;the\u00a0&#8216;no police watching&#8217; and [thinking] that they could take anything they\u00a0want.&#8221;[<span data-fontsize=\"12\">11]<\/span>\u00a0Brands&#8217; omission of the consequences of the LA Riots in his book does not reinforce that racial tensions are still high and very much alive even after previous events.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3701\" style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2017\/12\/looting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3701\" class=\"wp-image-3701 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2017\/12\/looting.jpg\" alt=\"Courtesy of thewordisbond.com\" width=\"960\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2017\/12\/looting.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2017\/12\/looting-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2017\/12\/looting-768x320.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2017\/12\/looting-500x208.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3701\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LA Riots resulted in looting, among other consequences<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The rioting continued until\u00a0May 4<span data-fontsize=\"12\">th<\/span>, when\u00a0&#8220;6,000 National Guardsmen and another 4,000 federal troops and Marines&#8221;[<span data-fontsize=\"12\">12]<\/span>\u00a0were deployed to ratify the incident. For\u00a0most, many\u00a0had started to\u00a0resume\u00a0their day-to-day activities towards the end of the riots. Public transportation that had been shut down was up and running again, children were going back to school, and adults were going back to work. For others\u00a0who\u00a0were spectators,\u00a0like Daley, work did not really stop; &#8220;yeah, we\u00a0still have to go to work. It&#8217;s not like the work is going to\u00a0close. People are just talking about it [riots] at work; what they have seen, what has happened, what&#8217;s going on.&#8221;[<span data-fontsize=\"12\">13]<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Daley&#8217;s account of her experience of the LA Riots offers a different perspective on racial tensions. Okay? But other than\u00a0that, it was like more of a fascination of what we see. We&#8217;re fascinated that they have all these freeways, we&#8217;re fascinated that people are driving.\u00a0So\u00a0it&#8217;s not like, how would you say it? It&#8217;s not like we would say that \u2013 I would say probably America was really rich. That everywhere you go, there is \u2013 its organized. And then people started discussing.
