{"id":677,"date":"2025-09-01T02:00:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T02:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-211constitution\/?page_id=677"},"modified":"2025-11-20T19:05:51","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T19:05:51","slug":"research-journal","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-211constitution\/assignments\/research-journal\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Journal"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Due December 2 and December 9<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Students will submit two research journal entries (2-4 pages each or about 500 to 1,000 words per entry), posted PRIVATE at the course website.\u00a0 These narrative posts will detail research efforts for <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-211constitution\/assignments\/final-projects\/\">the final papers<\/a>.\u00a0 The first entry <strong>(due by Tuesday, December 2)<\/strong> will describe the search for relevant secondary sources, especially in academic books and articles.\u00a0 The second entry <strong>(due by Tuesday, December 9)<\/strong> will describe the search for relevant primary sources, especially those available in published or digital format.\u00a0 Journal entries do not require footnotes, but they should include Chicago-style bibliographies and 2 to 3 images, properly captioned and credited.\u00a0 Entries will be graded on research effort, depth of analysis and quality of prose. Late entries will be penalized up to 5 points each day.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Posting at Course Site<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Students will be registered at this course WordPress site and will create two posts (categorized as RESEARCH JOURNAL) where they will detail their initial primary and secondary source research efforts (but remember SECONDARY first on DEC 2 and then primary sources on Dec 9).\u00a0 \u00a0Remember to save these posts as PRIVATE.\u00a0 For complete posting instructions at WordPress, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-211constitution\/files\/2025\/11\/Handout-Blog-Posting.pdf\">this handout on blog posting<\/a> Instructions or view\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/teagle\/2023-wordpress-instructions\/\">this instructional page.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Additional Guidelines<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Try to settle your topic BEFORE you start researching.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-211constitution\/final-paper-topics\/\">This page contains a list of possibilities<\/a> but also consult with Prof. Pinsker by email.\u00a0 You can change topics after starting (or even posting) your research journal entries, but it&#8217;s smarter to try to have everything work together.<\/li>\n<li>To get started on your research, look at the course\u2019s site <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-211constitution\/web-guides\/\">web guide<\/a>, but also remember that often it is easiest to find primary sources only AFTER reviewing some basic secondary (and especially reference) sources.\u00a0\u00a0You can find high quality academic sources via our\u00a0<strong>online library catalog<\/strong>\u00a0or through database resources such as\u00a0<strong>JSTOR<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>America: History &amp; Life<\/strong>.\u00a0 Take advantage of\u00a0<strong>Google Books<\/strong>\u00a0as well for its full text search capability and extensive snippet view. The most important reference source starting point, however, is\u00a0<strong>American National Biography Online<\/strong>\u00a0(available through the library database finder.\u00a0 Also make sure to consult the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.dickinson.edu\/history\">History research guide<\/a> from the library.\u00a0 The first entry (due DEC 2) must focus on secondary sources.\u00a0 The second entry (due Dec 9) must focus on primary sources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Here are two models for research journal posts, though note that these examples (from Evangeline Clausson, \u201928) were from a different class and a slightly different type of assignment that featured Chicago-style footnotes and NOT the bibliography entries required here.\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-204pinsker\/2025\/04\/10\/looking-past-the-veil\/\">Looking Past the Veil<\/a>\u00a0(primary sources)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-204pinsker\/2025\/02\/10\/the-values-of-book-reviews\/\">Book reviews<\/a>\u00a0(secondary sources)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>You can find additional models for research journal posts at the\u00a0Methods Center\u00a0and\u00a0Student Hall of Fame.\u00a0 Pay special attention to\u00a0<strong>Colin Macfarlane<\/strong>\u2018s advanced version of this research journal assignment for a History Methods course, viewing both his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/p-2AMUGgtqc?si=VWSu1jRvllf5up2W\">short documentary film<\/a>\u00a0and his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-304pinsker\/author\/colin\/\">multiple journal posts<\/a>.\u00a0 Also, you might enjoy reading about\u00a0<strong>Leah Miller\u2019s<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-204pinsker\/2012\/02\/28\/dead-ends-and-red-herrings\/\">\u00a0archival post<\/a>\u00a0about Dickinson graduate and Civil War era congressman John Creswell.\u00a0 In the course of her work on Creswell, Leah found a previously unpublished note from Abraham Lincoln.<\/li>\n<li>Journal posts should always try to open with an engaging detail, then provide a brief description of the research topic and types of sources pursued before pivoting to a thesis statement that highlights the main lesson or lessons learned during the research experience.\u00a0 \u00a0These \u201clessons\u201d should focus on the nature of research and how to improve your method \u2013not about your final essay topic.<\/li>\n<li>These posts can be written in the first person (\u201cI\u201d pronouns) and should try to narrate or describe the research process in a roughly chronological way.\u00a0 No footnotes are typically required.<\/li>\n<li>The main goal of this assignment is to help future students demystify the research process.\u00a0 Try to make it easier for them to succeed by learning from your experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>At the end of the narrative section of the post (about 500 to 1,000 words), please add a bibliography of at least six sources in alphabetical order (by author last name) and in proper Chicago style that you discovered from the appropriate category (either primary or secondary).\u00a0 Please consult as needed with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagomanualofstyle.org\/tools_citationguide\/citation-guide-1.html\">library\u2019s Chicago-style guide<\/a>, but make sure to use sample BIBLIOGRAPHY models for formatting and NOT footnote examples.
