All essays must include source material from the assigned readings properly cited using Chicago-style footnotes. Outside research is allowed but not required. Additional information will be available on the annotated assignment guidelines at the course site. Essays will be graded on depth of analysis, use of evidence, and quality of prose. Late essays will be penalized up to 5 points each day.\u00a0 Please send your essay by email attachment as either a PDF or Word document.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Please choose ONE of the follow essay topics:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>Why was campaigning for office so complicated for candidates during the revolutionary and early national period?<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>OR<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>Why does historian Joanne Freeman find so much insight about the evolution of early American political campaigns from careful examination of Aaron Burr&#8217;s controversial career?<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Annotated Guidelines<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Relevant reading assignments for this essay include Joanne Freeman&#8217;s Affairs of Honor and other sources featured on the course site.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Please open your paper with a descriptive title and your name (byline).<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Make sure to address a question and devise a thesis statement that can be effectively argued in a short paper.\u00a0 Consult the Methods Center handout on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2011\/08\/HANDOUT-How-to-Write-a-Thesis-Statement1.pdf\">How to Write a Thesis Statement<\/a><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><i class=\"x_ContentPasted0 ContentPasted0\">Be specific.\u00a0 Use examples, dates, statistics and snippets of quotation to support your claims.<\/i><em class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0 x_ContentPasted0 ContentPasted0\">\u00a0Outside research is allowed but not required.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Make sure you are using and formatting your footnotes correctly.\u00a0 Provide footnotes for all quotations and highly specific information (such as statistics).
