All essays must include material from sources featured on the course site properly cited using Chicago-style footnotes. Outside research is allowed but not required. Essays will be graded on depth of analysis, use of evidence, and quality of prose. Late essays will be penalized up to 5 points each day.<\/p>\n<p>Please choose ONE of the follow essay topics:<\/p>\n<div>&#8211;Why had the sectional crisis over slavery reached such a boiling point by 1850?<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>OR<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>&#8211;Why did civil war break out in 1861 but not in 1851?<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Please open your paper with a descriptive title and your byline.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><i>Organize your essay in a way that respects chronology and historical context.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><em>Prof. Pinsker is available to review drafts (before Monday) and you may utilize the Writing Center; do NOT consult with other students in the class<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Make sure to devise a thesis statement that can be effectively argued in a short paper.\u00a0 Consult the Methods Center handout on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2011\/08\/HANDOUT-How-to-Write-a-Thesis-Statement1.pdf\">How to Write a Thesis Statement<\/a><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Make sure you are formatting your footnotes correctly (see some of the samples below).\u00a0 For further guidance, see this methods handout on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2011\/08\/HANDOUT-How-to-Use-Footnotes2.pdf\">How to Use Footnotes<\/a><\/em><em>\u00a0and consult as needed with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.dickinson.edu\/c.php?g=56073&amp;p=360110\">library\u2019s Chicago-style guide<\/a>, but make sure to use sample footnote models for formatting and NOT bibliography examples.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sample Footnotes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[1] Ian Beamish et al., \u201cThe Cotton Revolution,\u201d in <em>The American Yawp<\/em>, eds.
