Late project submissions will be penalized 5 points per day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>All submissions by email (either with Word doc or PDF attachment or by email URL link)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>By <strong>Monday, April 29<\/strong>, students must submit an 8- to 10-page narrative essay on their subject, relying on a range of primary and secondary sources, and employing Chicago-style footnotes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>NOTE:\u00a0 Provisionally graded essays will NOT be penalized for lateness, but students must communicate clearly if they miss the 4\/29 deadline and they must submit NO LATER than 5\/3 or face penalties on their final project grade<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>STUDENT MODEL:\u00a0Aidan McDonald,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/files\/2020\/08\/McDonald-Paper-on-Ackerman.pdf\">Amos T. Ackerman and Reconstruction<\/a>\u00a0(Spring 2016)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Students should consult with Prof. Pinsker before selecting their subjects.\u00a0 The key to a good choice lies in finding an episode that interests you COMBINED with easy access to a full range of sources, including primary sources by and about the subject.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Research effort<\/strong> is critical in an assignment like this.\u00a0 You can find high quality academic sources via our <strong>online library catalog<\/strong> or through database resources such as <strong>JSTOR<\/strong> and <strong>America: History &amp; Life<\/strong>.\u00a0 Take advantage of <strong>Google Books<\/strong> as well for its full text search capability and extensive snippet view. The most important reference source starting point, however, is <strong>American National Biography Online<\/strong> (available through the library database finder.\u00a0 Also make sure to c<\/em><em>onsult <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/web-guides\/\">our course site web guides<\/a>\u00a0for additional help and check out the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.dickinson.edu\/history\">History research guide<\/a> from the library.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>For <strong>primary sources,\u00a0<\/strong>each topic will offer different opportunities.\u00a0 Always seek out published or digitized sources such as letters, diaries and speeches.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re writing military history, make sure to consult the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/2015\/01\/21\/meades-description-of-round-top-ridge\/\">online OR (Official Records of the War of the Rebellion)<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 But for all topics, try to take advantage of the library&#8217;s historic newspaper databases.\u00a0 And as you&#8217;re researching primary sources for your initial paper, remember that you will also want to identify good source images for later display on your final project website.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>ON WRTING:<\/strong>\u00a0 Make sure to devise a thesis statement that explains the significance of the subject in the Civil War era in a creative and engaging manner.\u00a0 Consult the Methods Center handout on <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2011\/08\/HANDOUT-How-to-Write-a-Thesis-Statement1.pdf\">How to Write a Thesis Statement<\/a><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Make sure you are formatting your footnotes correctly (see some of the samples below).\u00a0 For further guidance, see this methods handout on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2011\/08\/HANDOUT-How-to-Use-Footnotes2.pdf\">How to Use Footnotes<\/a><\/em><em>\u00a0and consult as needed with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.dickinson.edu\/c.php?g=56073&amp;p=360110\">library\u2019s Chicago-style guide<\/a>, but make sure to use sample footnote models for formatting and NOT bibliography examples.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Don\u2019t underestimate the importance of integrating your quoted evidence with some degree of fluidity.\u00a0 Awkwardly inserting quotations is one of the hallmarks of mediocre undergraduate essays.\u00a0 Consult\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2011\/08\/HANDOUT-How-to-Use-Quotations.pdf\">this handout<\/a>\u00a0from the methods center for a range of good tips.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Also, please guard against plagiarism.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2010\/09\/Handout-Plagiarism-2.pdf\">Remember our discussion from the very first day of the semester<\/a>.\u00a0 Never write your own words while looking directly at your sources, especially secondary sources \u2013unless you are quoting them<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>And finally, always remember to proofread your work by printing it out and reading it aloud, slowly.
