Sumter&#8217;s guns<br \/>\nHe told dear Whitman&#8217;s captain<br \/>\nIn language frank and keen,<br \/>\n&#8220;Who really leads this union,<br \/>\nIt remains to be seen!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln gave his rival in March of &#8217;61<br \/>\nA seat in the cabinet<br \/>\nState Department #1<br \/>\n&#8220;Administration needs a policy<br \/>\nDomestic and foreign, you see<br \/>\nHere is what I would do<br \/>\nWere it up to me!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>O Seward, a Republican<br \/>\nThought he would be the one<br \/>\nTo take hold of the Union<br \/>\nSo for office he did run<br \/>\nBut Lincoln won the primary<br \/>\nAnd stormed upon the scene<br \/>\nStealing Seward&#8217;s thunder, oh<br \/>\nIt made New Yorkers green!<\/p>\n<p>The Great Emancipator<br \/>\nThough it wasn&#8217;t yet his name<br \/>\nWrote back to William Seward<br \/>\nFor his argument to maim<br \/>\n&#8220;A month into my term<br \/>\nAnd plenty done by me!<br \/>\nYou give advice, I make the calls<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s how it&#8217;s going to be!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Below is a musical interpretation of Abraham Lincoln&#8217;s letter to William Seward, April 1, 1861, written and performed by Patrick Horan (Dickinson &#8217;15) with\u00a0Isabel Burlingame (Dickinson &#8217;15).
