{"id":2043,"date":"2016-06-26T14:00:52","date_gmt":"2016-06-26T14:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/?p=2043"},"modified":"2020-02-25T13:32:01","modified_gmt":"2020-02-25T13:32:01","slug":"first-photo-of-dickinson-secession-winter-1861","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/2016\/06\/26\/first-photo-of-dickinson-secession-winter-1861\/","title":{"rendered":"First Photo of Dickinson, Secession Winter, 1861"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the College Archivist, this may well be the very first preserved photograph of Dickinson College &#8211;at least the earliest one that can be accurately dated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/16699\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4770\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4770\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2016\/06\/Old-West-image.jpg\" alt=\"Old West image\" width=\"640\" height=\"423\" \/><\/a>There are several early photographs of West College (above) and East College that have been loosely attributed to the 1860s, but this striking image of Dickinson\u00a0students standing in front of Old West most definitely comes to us straight out of the secession\u00a0crisis from early 1861. \u00a0We can identify the date of this image with some precision as being either in February or March of that year, because of a few tell-tale clues. \u00a0First, the circular window near the crest of the front roof contains damage from a snowball fight that had occurred in December 1860.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-4771\" src=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/blogdivided\/files\/2016\/06\/Snowball-1024x759.png\" alt=\"Snowball\" width=\"1024\" height=\"759\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was then College Librarian and noted historian <a href=\"http:\/\/deila.dickinson.edu\/theirownwords\/author\/SellersC.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charles Coleman Sellers<\/a> who first observed this detail when he wrote a note thanking the family of <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/6943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Henry Zimmerman<\/a> (Class of 1861) after they had\u00a0donated the photograph to the college\u00a0in the 1950s. \u00a0At the time, Sellers concluded this detail &#8220;probably&#8221;\u00a0suggested a composition sometime in spring 1861, &#8220;since broken panes in the attic window indicate that the snowball damage of the previous season has not yet been repaired.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet Sellers was surely being too cautious. \u00a0The state of foliage on the trees (mostly bare, but with some early buds), coupled with the various types of colder weather\u00a0dress by the students,\u00a0makes February or March 1861 the obvious timing for the photograph. Willey<\/a> (Class of 1862) described the chaotic scene in <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/sites\/cwblog\/2010\/06\/23\/william-p-willeys-april-1861-letters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two remarkable letters<\/a>\u00a0he sent home to his father, a Virginia politician who opposed secession. \u00a0There was also a later novel written about this period in Carlisle by the daughter of <a href=\"http:\/\/hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu\/node\/5987\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Herman Johnson<\/a>, the college president. \u00a0Mary Johnson Dillon&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=0uM_AAAAYAAJ&amp;dq=mary%20dillon%20old%20bellaire&amp;pg=PP1#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">In Old Bellaire<\/a> <\/em>(1906) contains a memorable character named Rex McAllister, a dashing student from South Carolina, <a href=\"http:\/\/housedivided.dickinson.edu\/library\/Thompson1_1963.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who was reportedly based upon McCants<\/a>. \u00a0The novel describes\u00a0McAllister\u00a0(McCants) as being &#8220;slender,&#8221; favoring a &#8220;long coat, of finest broadcloth,&#8221; with &#8220;Bryonic collar,&#8221; and a &#8220;broad palmetto hat.&#8221; \u00a0 In her fictionalized account, Dillon also offers vivid depictions of\u00a0McAllister&#8217;s &#8220;coal-black curls&#8221; and &#8220;smoothly shaven face.&#8221; \u00a0All of this leads us to speculate that McCants may have been this figure in the 1861 photograph of Old West:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2066 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/files\/2016\/06\/McCants-or-Harrison.png\" alt=\"McCants or Harrison?\" width=\"342\" height=\"664\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/files\/2016\/06\/McCants-or-Harrison.png 342w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/files\/2016\/06\/McCants-or-Harrison-155x300.png 155w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Or is it possible that McCants was also part of this photograph (below) taken from that era in front of East College with Mary Johnson (Dillon), seated front and center, along with several other unidentified younger men and women?
