{"id":254,"date":"2015-01-21T14:32:28","date_gmt":"2015-01-21T14:32:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/?p=254"},"modified":"2016-06-21T01:22:31","modified_gmt":"2016-06-21T01:22:31","slug":"images-of-henry-box-brown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/2015\/01\/21\/images-of-henry-box-brown\/","title":{"rendered":"Images of Henry &#8220;Box&#8221; Brown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Historical images of Henry &#8220;Box&#8221; Brown are not as rare as one might imagine. \u00a0The nickname refers to\u00a0a slave who escaped from Richmond, Virginia in March 1849 inside of box that was shipped to Philadelphia via Adams Express over the course of about 24 hours. \u00a0The &#8220;Box&#8221; Brown escape became the most sensational of the Underground Railroad stories in the years before the Civil War. \u00a0There are no known photographs of Henry Brown, but the publicity surrounding his remarkable &#8220;resurrection&#8221; (as abolitionists quickly called it)\u00a0produced a number of popular book illustrations\u00a0and lithographic prints.
