{"id":287,"date":"2015-01-21T22:52:33","date_gmt":"2015-01-21T22:52:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/?p=287"},"modified":"2024-04-11T18:23:08","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T18:23:08","slug":"meades-description-of-round-top-ridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/2015\/01\/21\/meades-description-of-round-top-ridge\/","title":{"rendered":"Meade&#8217;s Description of &#8220;Round Top Ridge&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u00a0Find a copy of General Meade\u2019s official description of the fighting on Little Round Top during the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>How does a modern-day student accomplish this in the most efficient way possible? \u00a0Searching combined key words like &#8220;Meade&#8221; &#8220;Round Top&#8221; and &#8220;Gettysburg&#8221; in Google yields almost countless website entries, starting with Wikipedia. \u00a0Using &#8220;Meade&#8221; and &#8220;official description&#8221; helps, but still doesn&#8217;t provide a clear and quick result.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, this question forces the digitally savvy student to think about how evidence was organized in a pre-digital age. \u00a0A quick study of Civil War military research will yield the information that following the conflict, the War Department organized a massive compilation of official military correspondence and after-action reports filed by both sides. This collection, known as the <em>OR<\/em>, was formally published in 128 volumes over twenty years between 1881 and 1901, under the title:\u00a0<i>The War of the Rebellion: a Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. \u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/files\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-21-at-5.45.13-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-288\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/files\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-21-at-5.45.13-PM-300x176.png\" alt=\"Meade's OR account\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/files\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-21-at-5.45.13-PM-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/files\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-21-at-5.45.13-PM-1024x600.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-288pinsker\/files\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-21-at-5.45.13-PM.png 1212w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>There are numerous full-text searchable copies of the OR scattered across the Internet and in various digital subscription services. \u00a0One of the best ways to access the OR material is through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/collections.library.cornell.edu\/moa_new\/waro.html\">Making\u00a0of America \/ Cornell site<\/a>. \u00a0Another good way to access the full-text OR online is through <a href=\"http:\/\/ehistory.osu.edu\/books\/official-records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ohio State University<\/a>. \u00a0Choosing the volume covering the Gettysburg campaign (Series 1, Volume 27, chapter 39) and the entering Part 1 &#8220;Reports&#8221; section will enable a student to search the text. \u00a0Enter a term like &#8220;Round Top&#8221; and the results will quickly lead to Meade&#8217;s official report on the Battle of Gettysburg filed on October 1, 1863. \u00a0On p. 116, you can read the general&#8217;s terse description of the &#8220;desperate but unsuccessful efforts&#8221; of the &#8220;enemy&#8221; to secure what Meade only referred to as &#8220;Round Top Ridge.&#8221; \u00a0This was his version of the events now made famous by recollections from figures such as Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, novels such as\u00a0<em>The Killer Angels<\/em> and movies such as &#8220;Gettysburg.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: \u00a0There is a separate OR series for the Union and Confederate navies. \u00a0You can access a full-text copy of all thirty volumes (1894-1922) once again from the <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.library.cornell.edu\/moa_new\/moawar.html\">Making of America \/ Cornell University library<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Find a copy of General Meade\u2019s official description of the fighting on Little Round Top during the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
