All essays must feature source material from the course site, including the Gaddis book, cited using Chicago-style footnotes. Outside research is allowed but not required. Essays will be graded on depth of analysis, use of evidence, and quality of prose. Late essays will be penalized up to 5 points each day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Please choose ONE of the follow essay topics:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>How and why did the Truman administration&#8217;s approach to the Cold War change between 1945 and 1953?<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>OR<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>Did the foreign policy achievements of the Truman administration in the early years of the Cold War outweigh its failures?<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annotated Guidelines<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Relevant reading assignments for this essay include John Gaddis&#8217;s Strategies of Containment and other sources featured on the course site.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Please open your paper with a descriptive title and your name (byline).<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Make sure to address a question and devise a thesis statement that can be effectively argued in a short paper.\u00a0 Consult the Methods Center handout on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2011\/08\/HANDOUT-How-to-Write-a-Thesis-Statement1.pdf\">How to Write a Thesis Statement<\/a><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><i class=\"x_ContentPasted0 ContentPasted0\">Be specific.\u00a0 Use examples, dates, statistics and snippets of quotation to support your claims.<\/i><em class=\"x_x_ContentPasted0 x_ContentPasted0 ContentPasted0\">\u00a0Outside research is allowed but not required.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Make sure you are using and formatting your footnotes correctly.\u00a0 Provide footnotes for all quotations and highly specific information (such as statistics).
