{"id":52,"date":"2024-01-16T19:55:23","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T19:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-coldwar\/?page_id=52"},"modified":"2024-04-11T14:27:05","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T14:27:05","slug":"final-project","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-coldwar\/assignments\/final-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Final Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>ESSAY Due April 29 by 5pm\u00a0 \/\/ WEBSITE Due May 9 by 5pm\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The highlight of this semester will be a website project that students will undertake to explain the contributions of an American figure in shaping or illustrating aspects of the Cold War era.\u00a0 Subjects might include diplomats or politicians who helped define the period 1945 to 1991, or ordinary Americans whose lives were shaped by Cold War developments in that timeframe.\u00a0 By <strong>Monday, April 29<\/strong>, students must submit an 8- to 10-page essay on their subject, relying on a range of primary and secondary sources, and employing Chicago-style footnotes.\u00a0 All essays should address some key element of Cold War historiography or interpretation. Papers will receive provisional grades that will be updated following submission of the final website project. By <strong>Thursday, May 9<\/strong>, students should revise this essay and transform it into a website on the free platform Weebly.\u00a0 Each website should include an array of properly credited and captioned images as well as at least one embedded short video (about 1 to 2 minutes). Projects will be graded on depth of analysis, research and design effort, and quality of prose. Late research submissions will be penalized up to 5 points per day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>All submissions by email (either with Word doc or PDF attachment or by email URL link)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Additional guidelines &#8211;Draft Essay (4\/29\/24)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>NOTE:\u00a0 Provisionally graded essays will NOT be penalized for lateness, but students must communicate clearly if they miss the 4\/29 deadline and they must submit NO LATER than 5\/3 or face penalties on their final project grade<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Students should consult with Prof. Pinsker over email as they make decisions about choosing their Cold War subjects and also about transforming their profile paper into an effective teaching website.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Prof. Pinsker will review full or partial drafts until day before deadline for either essay or website<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Please open your paper with a descriptive title and your name (byline).<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Make sure to address a question and devise a thesis statement that can be effectively argued in a short paper.\u00a0 Consult the Methods Center handout on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2011\/08\/HANDOUT-How-to-Write-a-Thesis-Statement1.pdf\">How to Write a Thesis Statement<\/a><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Research effort is key for this paper.\u00a0 Make sure to consult a thoughtful array of both primary and secondary sources.\u00a0 To get started, look carefully at Herring\u2019s book (including his footnotes and bibliographic essay) and academic reference sources, such as\u00a0<strong>American National Biography Online<\/strong>\u00a0(database finder),\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/history.state.gov\/departmenthistory\/people\/secretaries\">Office of the State Department Historian<\/a><\/strong>, or\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bioguide.congress.gov\/biosearch\/biosearch.asp\">Congressional Biographical Directory<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 Then turn to academic secondary sources, such as books via our<strong>\u00a0library catalog<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Google Books<\/strong>\u00a0(but note limitations) or academic journals from our database finder, such as available via\u00a0<strong>JSTOR<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>America: History and Life<\/strong>.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Your next research step involves careful primary source research.\u00a0 Use different types of historical newspaper databases from our college subscription services, such as\u00a0<strong>Historical Newspapers (ProQuest)<\/strong>.\u00a0 But also make sure to check relevant government document collections, especially\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/history.state.gov\/historicaldocuments\">FOREIGN RELATIONS OF THE US OR FRUS from the US State Department<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0 But also consult GW National Security Archive and other collections.\u00a0 See our\u00a0course web guide\u00a0for further details.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><i class=\"x_ContentPasted0 ContentPasted0\">Organize your<\/i><i><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0 ContentPasted0\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0 ContentPasted0\" data-markjs=\"true\">essay<\/span><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0 ContentPasted0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i class=\"x_ContentPasted0 ContentPasted0\">in a way that respects chronology and historical context.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i class=\"x_ContentPasted0 ContentPasted0\">Use past tense except when describing modern scholarship<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i class=\"x_ContentPasted0 ContentPasted0\">Avoid first person pronouns, including \u201cour\u201d<\/i><\/li>\n<li><em>Take to care to evaluate your sources as you deploy them in your essay.\u00a0 See this methods post on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-404pinsker\/2015\/11\/05\/evaluating-sources\/\">Evaluating Sources<\/a>\u00a0for a helpful overall framework.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Don\u2019t underestimate the importance of integrating your quoted evidence with some degree of fluidity.\u00a0 Awkwardly inserting quotations is one of the hallmarks of mediocre undergraduate essays.\u00a0 Consult\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-117pinsker\/files\/2011\/08\/HANDOUT-How-to-Use-Quotations.pdf\">this handout<\/a>\u00a0from the methods center for a range of good tips.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Also, please guard against plagiarism.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/hist-118pinsker\/files\/2010\/09\/Handout-Plagiarism-2.pdf\">Remember our discussion from the very first day of the semester<\/a>.\u00a0 Never write your own words while looking directly at your sources, especially secondary sources \u2013unless you are quoting them.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>And finally, always remember to proofread your work by printing it out and reading it aloud, slowly. analysis<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Explain significance<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>WEB PROJECTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Teaching websites can be organized with an essential question or theme rather than a thesis statement (as in a standard paper).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><em>EXAMPLE THESIS: \u201cRobert Kennedy\u2019s participation in ExComm meetings during the Cuban Missile Crisis went far beyond the customary role of an attorney general, raising profound questions about the Kennedy brothers\u2019 commitment to orderly national security decision-making.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<em>EXAMPLE QUESTION: \u201cWho deserved to be \u2018in the room\u2019 with President Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once again, students should employ a variety of primary and secondary sources, but now benefiting from the online platform, they should also strive to find ways for providing full-text access to those primary sources whenever available.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Consider using the course web guides as models for sharing access to sources<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most important, students should also strive to engage classroom audiences with a host of visual and multi-media tools such as timelines, maps and podcasts, in addition to the required short video.<\/p>\n<p>Students may also embed and curate multi-media elements from outside sources, but they must take care to credit and caption those sources properly.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Credits<\/strong>\u00a0offer short acknowledgments of sources (Library of Congress) or (House Divided Project at Dickinson College).\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Captions\u00a0<\/strong>provide brief descriptions of images or multi-media.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All text content at the student-produced websites should be original and cited with Chicago-style footnotes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Don\u2019t forget your Chicago-style rules.\u00a0 See this methods handout on\u00a0<a examples.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students should submit a link to their website by email to Prof. Pinsker.\u00a0 Late projects will be penalized up to 5 points per day.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Weebly guidance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Building websites in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weebly.com\/\">Weebly<\/a>\u00a0is easy \u2013and free (even though the platform is now part of SQUARE.\u00a0 Just make sure you sign up for the free version of the site and pick the \u201csubdomain\u201d URL that allows for Weebly branding (e.g. 1876election.weebly.com).\u00a0 NOTE: sometimes your desired subdomain URL is not available.\u00a0 Just keep trying.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>PRIVACY:\u00a0 Your Weebly sites can be kept essentially private if you change the SEO settings on your web pages to \u201cDiscourage Search Engines.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>All websites should have at least three main content pages: e.g. Biographical background, Diplomatic Episode or Main Theme, Career Significance.\u00a0 All sites should also have a separate home page that describes both the nature of the project (biographical subject) and the author (with grad year and major) and a mention of this class and semester.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0There is no minimum word count, but most sites should contain the rough equivalent of the 8-10 page profile paper combined with supporting images, one embedded original short video and perhaps some additional multi-media resources (original or external).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\"
