In the case of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">The Historie of foure footed beastes<\/span><\/em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">what drew me to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">it <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">was that it <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">seemed\u00a0 like<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">an <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">antiquity<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\"> contain<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">ing<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\"> eye-catching illustrations; <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">it <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">reminded me of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">my<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\"> ear<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">lier experience and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">motivated me<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">a closer study of the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart SCXW43434778 BCX0\">book<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">, even though it doesn\u2019t identify itself as a dictionary (the first English dictionary, by Robert Cawdrey, appearing in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart SCXW43434778 BCX0\">1604, then followed by Samuel Johnson\u2019s <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">A Dictionary of the English Language<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">, in 1775)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43434778 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW104454775 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104454775 BCX0\">W<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104454775 BCX0\">hen reading <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104454775 BCX0\">this book<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104454775 BCX0\">, the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104454775 BCX0\">overwhelming<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104454775 BCX0\"> documentation used to write the descriptions of the creatures listed in it leaps out. The book refers to classic texts, provides an exhaustive list of authors and sources consulted, and gives an account of the names of the species<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104454775 BCX0\"> discussed <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104454775 BCX0\">in different languages. It is a book that, for reasons that I later analyze in detail, seems to have been conceived for a didactic purpos<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104454775 BCX0\">e<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104454775 BCX0\">. Holding it, having it in my hands, is not easy because of its large size (<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104454775 BCX0\">22 x 33 x 8 cm. \/ 9 x 13 x 3 inches, approximately<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104454775 BCX0\">) and its very poor state of preservation, which makes it a delicate object to handle and observe carefully but which also shows the great use that has been given to it.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW104454775 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:708,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">T<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">here is no information on the book\u2019s covers nor its spine<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\"> about the title<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">. In this case,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\"> a X<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">erox <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">of what is believed to be <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">the title page\u00a0 gives information about this book, although it may not be this edition.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">\u00a0In the back of the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">print<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">, presumably made b<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">y the archivist or <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">owner <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">of the book, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">Library of Congress<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">\u201d<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">is<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\"> written down<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">specifying <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">where<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">this<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">first page was xeroxed<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">. That is to say, this book does not preserve its first title page<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">, but furthermore it <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">has in its place <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">information <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">from a book that does not match this one<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">. The reason for this affirmation is that,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">i<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">n the copy<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">only includes the title of the first book of living creatures<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">:<\/span> <\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">The Historie of foure footed beastes<\/span> <\/span><\/em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">(<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">ee <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">Figure<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\"> 1)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">, first<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\"> published in London, in 1607<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">, but<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">he <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">book <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">that is <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">here being <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">described <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">includes a second part<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\"> published <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">originally <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">in 1608, entitled<\/span> <\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">The Historie of Serpents. Or, The second Booke of living Creatures<\/span><\/em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">.<\/span> <\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">What we know: b<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">oth parts<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">wer<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">e written by Edward Topsell<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\"> and printed and edited by William Jaggard<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">. But what is the title, then, of the copy <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">kept <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">Archive?<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">One option <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">is<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">that this volume <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">could have been <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">one of the 1658 copies of <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">History of Four-Footed Beasts and Serpents<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">pub<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">lished more than thirty years after Topsell\u2019s death<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">, but that volume was<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\"> p<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">rinted <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">by E. Cotes, for G. Sawbridge<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\"> not by Jaggard. This leads me to think that it is a previous copy of a volume including the two books, maybe as a selling technique <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">conjured by the printer, previous to the actual 1658 copy that brought them together after the author\u2019s death.<\/span> <\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">A<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">pparently, Topsell had planned to publish four parts of this histo<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">ry of living creatures, one on four-legged beasts, one on snakes, and later on<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\"> birds and fish. However, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\"> G. Lewis <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">would comment <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">on the matter: <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">\u00abSigns of hast<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">e, and perhaps of boredom, are evident already in the book on serpents. Despite the fact that Topsell lived on for another twenty years, the intended volumes on birds and fishes never appeared\u00bb<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">(Lewis)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW43269434 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_64\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64\" class=\"wp-image-64 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/historyofthebook\/files\/2023\/03\/IMG_8325-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/historyofthebook\/files\/2023\/03\/IMG_8325-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/historyofthebook\/files\/2023\/03\/IMG_8325-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/historyofthebook\/files\/2023\/03\/IMG_8325-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/historyofthebook\/files\/2023\/03\/IMG_8325-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/historyofthebook\/files\/2023\/03\/IMG_8325-676x901.jpg 676w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/historyofthebook\/files\/2023\/03\/IMG_8325-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-64\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Edward Topsell was notably enough no zoologist, but a clergyman who borrowed and translated from Latin to English mainly Konrad Gesner\u2019s well-known bestiary, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Historia Animalium<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, in order to compose these works<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The collaboration with Gesner would be proved by the fact that Gesner includes an Epistle \u201cTo the Reader\u201d as part of the front matter of Topsell\u2019s text, although it is still a matter to be explored in depth.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:708,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Historie of Foure Footed Beastes <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has a front matter<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> consisting of the missing title page, a dedicatory letter to reverend Richard Neile, the letter from Gesner \u201cTo the Reader\u201d, one from Topsell \u201cTo the learned Reader\u201d, a catalogue included by Topsell with all the authors that had previously written about the beasts, a Latin catalogue of the same content, and an \u201cEnglish Table\u201d with the names of every four-footed beast that he knew of (including, interestingly enough, unicorns, of whom he expressed his disbelief but nevertheless importance as a recurrent creature in other texts). The <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Historie of Serpents<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is separated from its first part of four-footed creatures by two blank sheets. Its front matter consists of a dedicatory letter addressed, once more, to reverend Richard Neile, a letter to the reader by Topsell, a \u201cTable of the severall Serpents, as they are rehearsed and described in this Treatise following\u201d, and the so called \u201cGenerall Treatise of Serpents\u201d, followed by the text in itself (and its questionable \u2013at least from today\u2019s point of view\u2013 idea of serpents; one of them being bees included in the serpent category). In the back matter, there is an \u201cEpilogus Gratulatorius\u201d entirely written in Latin, where Ludovico Leonoro and Thomo Bonhamo are praised, followed by \u201cA table of the names of al the Foure-footed-Serpents\u201d and \u201cA table of all the Latine names of Serpents without legges, as well corrupted as those in use\u201d, meaning that he included the classical Latin terms along with those used in the Vulgar Latin language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">E. Willoughby is the name that links this particular copy to the Archive, as it was donated to the library by the Willoughby family, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in memoriam<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This information can be found in the front paste-down endpaper which has a stamped card on it. page from the main text of either book.
