class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">almanac by any means.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\"> The book does not <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">contain<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\"> meteorological predictions, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">but rather the children&#8217;s literacy pamphlet <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">The New England Primer<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">However, in understanding this book to be a children&#8217;s <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">text the inclusion of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">owner&#8217;s names helps <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">determine<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\"> the afterlife of the present copy of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">An Almanack<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\"> Although difficult to read due to the combination of foxing and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">the writing being in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">pencil,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">the inside cover <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">has the signatures of sisters Hatty and Alice B French<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">(<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">fig<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">1<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">I <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">u<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">sed<\/span> <\/span><span class=\"TextRun residency as \u201cN.H.\u201d<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">(<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">fig<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\"> 1<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">Including their residency made finding them much easier on <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">Ancestory.com, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">I was able to narrow down the search results and i<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">t helped to ensure that I had the correct people while I was looking through documents. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">Hatty and Alice were the youngest of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">9 siblings and the daughters of Stephen and Sarah Stevens French. Harriet \u201cHatty\u201d Augusta French was born <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">on<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">April <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">19<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun Superscript SCXW73601570 BCX0\" data-fontsize=\"12\">th<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">1848,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\"> and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">passed away<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">on November 8<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun Superscript SCXW73601570 BCX0\" data-fontsize=\"12\">th<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">, 1888<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">Little is known about Hatty as she never married and did not have any children. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">There <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">is, however,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\"> a wealth of information about her younger sister Alice that contributes to the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">concept<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\"> of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">how <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">An Almanack<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\"> was <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">intended to be <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">read and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">its <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW73601570 BCX0\">value by the church.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">, 1851, and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">passed away on May 20<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun Superscript SCXW229695892 BCX0\" data-fontsize=\"12\">th<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">1912. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">There <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">are records<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\"> of Alice attending the New London Literary and Scientific Institution<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\"> in 1871<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">and Boston University in 1877<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">(<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">fig<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">2<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">Alice is attributed the title Doctor, which was <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">rare for women in the late 1800s, with approximately <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">2,432 women practicing as doctors<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\"> according to Hobart and William Smith Co<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">lleges<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">. Dr<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">. Alice Bird French married her husband <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">Dr. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">Henry Mills in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">April of 1880, the same month she earned her degree. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">Henry had previously been married twice, both wives passed away along with the three children he had fathered with them. He <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">was 78 when he <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">married Alice<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">while <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">Alice <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">was only<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\"> 29<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">. The two did not have any children but rather conducted work together <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">at their sanit<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">o<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">rium until Henry<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">s death in 1897. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">S<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">anatoriums <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">in 1880 <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">as<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\"> isolated environments used to trea<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">t tuberculosis<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\"> (Harvard Library)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229695892 BCX0\">. The passport allowed for her to travel Syria and Palestine for a year when she returned in 1901<\/span> <\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">fig 3<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">There is however no record of this trip<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">, apart from the dictation of such on <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">Ancestory.com<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\"> After her return to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">country,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\"> she <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">began<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">to preform medical missionary work<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\"> as part of the Presbyterian church. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">The Womans Board of Home Missions was the organization s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">he worked for <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">in the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">Appalachian Mountains. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">She lived out the rest of her life in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">West Vi<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">rginia, doing missionary work in Coal River, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">Dry Creek, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">Raleigh County<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW267031577 BCX0\">.
