For the year of the C<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">h<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">ristian <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">Empire, 1691<\/span><\/em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">a reader would expect to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">peruse<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\"> the lunar cycles and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">weather predictions for 1691<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">This is the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">intended<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\"> use for <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">an<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart SCXW96227219 BCX0\">lmanac<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">;<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">a tool<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">for<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\"> farmers to help predict how crops would <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">perform<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\"> based on <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">meteorological<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">and astrological <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">pre<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">dictions for the year.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">However, the reader would be mistaken as this <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">book<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">is neither an almanac, in the traditional sense, nor from 1691<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">. The present edition of <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">An Almanac<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">k<\/span> <\/span><\/em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">was printed in 1843<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">the text is <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">almost entirely<\/span> <\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">The Ne<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">w England Primer<\/span><\/em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">not an almanac. <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">The N<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">e<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">w England Primer<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\"> is a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">children&#8217;s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\"> textbook that was printed and used to promote literacy in America. Th<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">is <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">edition<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\"> of <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">An Almanack<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">, apart from the front matter, is <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">The Ne<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">w England P<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">rimer <\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">written by Benjamin Harris, who while not credited as the author of this book is included on the title page as the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">original<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\"> publisher<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96227219 BCX0\">. The typical almanac is in quarto size; roughly 12 inches tall. This almanac however is only 4.5 inches tall. It can fit in the palm of one hand and is less than half an inch thick. Compared to a quarto this book is miniscule; another reason being named <\/span><i style=\"color: #333333;font-size: 16px\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">An Almanack<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #333333;font-size: 16px\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> is widely misleading <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;font-size: 16px\" data-contrast=\"none\">(&#8220;Quarto&#8221;).<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;font-size: 16px\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559731&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:480}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The almanac has 46 leaves, none of which are numbered, and all show signs of foxing and staining. The pages are likely made of wood pulp as the switch to this material was made in the year prior to its publication and made a stronger paper <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Valente)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The publication year of the book also helps to determine the body font in this book which I have identified to be <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bodoni <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Penney). I determined this by researching what font type was widely used in the 19th century, I then used the app What the Font to confirm that the main font used in the book is <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bodoni <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">WhatTheFont<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The cover and binding unfortunately share in the signs of aging as the pages. <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">See Figure 2<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> The book is bound with a cotton ribbon that from repeated use has been exposed on the inside of the book. The front <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">matter<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">contains<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">a note from the publisher of the present edition, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">wo <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">advertisements<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">, a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">n<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\"> introduction to the present edition, certificates<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">, a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">song<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">and a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">portrait<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">The publisher, Ira Webster<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">, notes that <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">all the known <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">information about the origin of <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">The Ne<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">w England Primer<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">is included in one of the advertisements as a part of the front matter. <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">See Figure 3<\/span><\/span><\/em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">Webster also notes that <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">the information was copied from a book in the Massachusetts His<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">torical Society\u2019s Library. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">This publisher\u2019s note and the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">advertisement mentioned<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\"> a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW136347133 BCX0\">re both printed on the original title page.
