With a title like<\/span>:<\/span> <\/span>An Almanack; <\/span>Containing<\/span> an Account of the <\/span>Coeleslial<\/span> Motions, Aspects, &e<\/span>. For the year of the C<\/span>h<\/span>ristian <\/span>Empire, 1691<\/span><\/em>; <\/span><\/span>a reader would expect to <\/span>peruse<\/span> the lunar cycles and <\/span>weather predictions for 1691<\/span>.<\/span> This is the <\/span>intended<\/span> use for <\/span>an<\/span> a<\/span>lmanac<\/span>;<\/span> a tool<\/span> for<\/span> farmers to help predict how crops would <\/span>perform<\/span> based on <\/span>meteorological<\/span> and astrological <\/span>pre<\/span>dictions for the year.<\/span> However, the reader would be mistaken as this <\/span>book<\/span> is neither an almanac, in the traditional sense, nor from 1691<\/span>. The present edition of <\/span><\/span>An Almanac<\/span>k<\/span> <\/span><\/em>was printed in 1843<\/span>, <\/span>and <\/span>the text is <\/span>almost entirely<\/span> <\/span>The Ne<\/span>w England Primer<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/span>not an almanac. <\/span><\/span>The N<\/span>e<\/span>w England Primer<\/span><\/span><\/em> is a <\/span>children’s<\/span> textbook that was printed and used to promote literacy in America. Th<\/span>is <\/span>edition<\/span> of <\/span><\/span>An Almanack<\/span><\/span><\/em>, apart from the front matter, is <\/span><\/span>The Ne<\/span>w England P<\/span>rimer <\/span><\/span><\/em>written by Benjamin Harris, who while not credited as the author of this book is included on the title page as the <\/span>original<\/span> publisher<\/span>. This inclusion is <\/span>intriguing<\/span> as the primer was not added to the Henry Newman text<\/span> until the second edition print in 1777 and again in the present edition from 1843.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As if the almanac was not confusing enough in title and author, the<\/span>re is<\/span> second title page<\/span> in<\/span> between<\/span> the front matter and<\/span> the <\/span>primer text<\/span>. <\/span>The second title page more clearly <\/span>identifies<\/span> the book as <\/span><\/span>The Ne<\/span>w England Primer<\/span><\/span><\/em> printed in 1777.<\/span> <\/span>See Figure 1<\/span> <\/span><\/em>It is difficult to <\/span>assume<\/span> as to why the editor<\/span> (unknown)<\/span> of the current edition would include the title page of the <\/span>previous<\/span> edition<\/span>, but it is helpful to <\/span>identify<\/span> when<\/span> and where<\/span> certain aspects of the current edition were added to the Henry Newman text.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The size of this book should also be stressed. The typical almanac is in quarto size; roughly 12 inches tall. This almanac however is only 4.5 inches tall. It can fit in the palm of one hand and is less than half an inch thick. Compared to a quarto this book is miniscule; another reason being named <\/span>An Almanack<\/span><\/i> is widely misleading <\/span>(“Quarto”).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The almanac has 46 leaves, none of which are numbered, and all show signs of foxing and staining. The pages are likely made of wood pulp as the switch to this material was made in the year prior to its publication and made a stronger paper <\/span>(<\/span>Valente)<\/span>. The publication year of the book also helps to determine the body font in this book which I have identified to be <\/span>Bodoni <\/span>(Penney). I determined this by researching what font type was widely used in the 19th century, I then used the app What the Font to confirm that the main font used in the book is <\/span>Bodoni <\/span>(<\/span>WhatTheFont<\/span><\/i>)<\/span>. The cover and binding unfortunately share in the signs of aging as the pages. <\/span>See Figure 2<\/span><\/i> The book is bound with a cotton ribbon that from repeated use has been exposed on the inside of the book. The blue color from the front and back cover is flaking off from the cardboard, and the book is very delicate because of this.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The front matter of this book is dense as it spans <\/span>over 4 leaves. The front <\/span>matter<\/span> contains<\/span> a note from the publisher of the present edition, <\/span>t<\/span>wo <\/span>advertisements<\/span>, a<\/span>n<\/span> introduction to the present edition, certificates<\/span>, a <\/span>song<\/span> and a <\/span>portrait<\/span>. <\/span>The publisher, Ira Webster<\/span>, notes that <\/span>all the known <\/span>information about the origin of <\/span><\/span>The Ne<\/span>w England Primer<\/span><\/span><\/em> is included in one of the advertisements as a part of the front matter. <\/span><\/span>See Figure 3<\/span><\/span><\/em> Webster also notes that <\/span>the information was copied from a book in the Massachusetts His<\/span>torical Society\u2019s Library. <\/span>This publisher\u2019s note and the <\/span>advertisement mentioned<\/span> a<\/span>re both printed on the original title page. The <\/span>advertisement is for <\/span><\/span>The <\/span>N<\/span>e<\/span><\/em>w England Primer<\/em> enlarged <\/em><\/span><\/span>and similarly to this <\/span>book would have been printed with the inclusion of other writings<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second advertisement is <\/span>atypical as it is not an advertisement for another writing but rather a society of women from Boston <\/span>who vouch for reading the primer. <\/span>I<\/span>t <\/span>is also <\/span>worth mentioning that the editor left a note that this <\/span>advertisement was from a member of the society and the documents she ha<\/span>d<\/span> access to<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span> <\/span>See Figure 4<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The introduction to the present edition<\/span> narrates the story of the Westminster Assembly of Divines and how <\/span>this led to the <\/span>P<\/span>urit<\/span>an arrival in America with the Shorter Catechism. <\/span><\/span>See Figure 5<\/span><\/span><\/em> The Westminster Assembly of Divines was <\/span>held by the English long parliament with the intention of reforming the Church of England. From the <\/span>gathering the <\/span>S<\/span>horter Catechism was written, that is, ques<\/span>tions and answers that help to teach <\/span>the values of <\/span>the protestant religion<\/span> (<\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>The Westminster Shorter Catechism<\/span>\u201d<\/span>)<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>The introduction stresses the impo<\/span>rtance <\/span>of the catechism to the <\/span>Purit<\/span>ans, and then questions why these <\/span>teachings<\/span> should not continue now, as in<\/span> 1843<\/span>, since they are the \u201crichest treasure that ever human wisdom and industry accumulated\u201d (<\/span>Newman<\/span>).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The introduction page also <\/span>indicates<\/span> where, when, and how<\/span> the present edition was printed,<\/span> and<\/span> the price at four dollars<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>See Figure 5<\/span><\/span><\/em> The book was published and sold by Ira Webster in Hartford, Connecticut and was printed by R. H. Hobbs using the <\/span>stereotyping<\/span> method. <\/span>The <\/span>stereotyping method <\/span>used durable metal plates<\/span>, <\/span>which<\/span> p<\/span>rinted<\/span> faster and would last longer than other printing methods at the time. The stereotyping method also created exact copies of text on each sheet<\/span>, <\/span>the term stereotyping developed from this process<\/span> <\/span>(<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Stereotyping Printing<\/span>\u201d<\/span>).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The certificates <\/span>in the front matter can be best qualified <\/span>as<\/span> endorsements that <\/span>are found in<\/span> modern books.<\/span> I included a comparison of a certificate from <\/span><\/span>An Almanack<\/span><\/span><\/em> and <\/span>those from a modern book.<\/span> <\/span>See Figure 6<\/span> <\/span><\/em>The<\/span> certificates are quoted material from contemporary writers<\/span> or experts on the subject <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>catechism.<\/span> There is a note from the editor that these were included to add to the validity of the book, and for people likely <\/span>to have known the authors<\/span>, they would stress the gravity of the teachings.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After the certificates in the front matter is <\/span>A Song on Praise. A Song on Praise <\/span><\/i>is a hymnal which reads:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How glorious is our heav\u2019nly King<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n
Who reigns above the sky!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n
How shall a child presume to sing,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n
His dreadful Majesty?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n
How great his Pow\u2019r is, none can tell,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n
Nor think how large his Grace;\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n
Not Men below, nor Saints that dwell<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n
On high before his Face.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n
Not angels that stand round the LORD,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n

The song was written by Dr. Issac Watts who was known for his writing of hymnals especially in language that children would have been able to decipher (Watts).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, the portrait incorporated in the front matter is captioned, \u201cThe Honorable John Hancock, esq; President of the American Congress.\u201d The portrait is a beautiful seal of John Hancock in side profile and is drawn in a contour line style of portraiture. <\/span>See Figure 7 <\/span><\/i>Around the portrait are embellishments that resemble roses, and there is a noticeable absence of ink in parts of the picture. John Hancock was from Massachusetts, as was the almanac, which could be the reason for his presence in this book. It is however interesting that he would be pictured in a deeply Protestant book as he was an open advocate for Christianity (Smith).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apart <\/span>from the front matter<\/span>, this book <\/span>has user marks on the inside cover. <\/span>From the <\/span>handwriting<\/span> left behind<\/span>,<\/span> I was able to <\/span>identify<\/span> a former owner of <\/span><\/span>An Almanack<\/span><\/span><\/em> to be Alice B. French and her sister Hatty French. Ali<\/span>ce also left the city of Bedford, New Hampshire in her inscription<\/span>. In another post<\/span>,<\/span> I will outline further <\/span>who Alice B. French is and how her life contributes to our knowledge about how this book was read. It is incredibly lucky to have this information left behind in the book for <\/span>deciphering <\/span>the lif<\/span>e of the book.<\/span> <\/span>See Figure 8<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
