Among the scenes of arming of heroes in the Iliad,<\/em> the arming of Patroclus in Book 16 is unique in that pattern of \u00a0aristeia<\/i> that we come to expect after<\/em> the arming scenes is suddenly broken, argues Olga Faccani.\u00a0Patroclus not taking Achilles\u2019 spear before going to battle stands for an incompleteness in the aristeia<\/i> and forecasts his destruction. And so Achilles slapped his thighs and spoke to Patroclus:
\n\u201cStand up, divine Patroclus, master of horsemen;
\nI can see the fighting and the fire raging by the ships,
\nAnd may our enemies never take them:
\nWe should not delay any further.
\nQuick, put on my armor, and I will gather the army.\u201d
\nThus spoke Achilles, and Patroclus armed himself in flashing bronze:
\nFirst he wore around his legs the stunning greaves,
\nJoined together with silver ankle-pieces;
\nSecondly, he fastened the breastplate around his chest,
\nThe superb breastplate belonging to swift-footed Achilles, embroidered with stars.
\nThen, he threw the bronze sword, silver studded, around his shoulders,
\nand the sturdy massive shield.
\nOn his strong head he then put the helmet,
\nAdorned with horse tail hair,
\nAnd its crest nodded terribly form above.
\nHe finally seized two deadly spears,
\nwhich perfectly fitted his palms.
\nBut he forgot the spear of noble Achilles,
\nThat heavy, long and sturdy spear which none of the other Acheans could lift:
\nFor Achilles alone managed to hold it.
\nThat spear had been carved out of Peliaden ash,
\nFrom the peak of Mount Pelion,
\nAnd Chirion offered it to his dear father,
\nSo that it could be the doom of many heroes.<\/p>\n
