Though rescued from the temple, the battered eighty-year-old woman succumbed to her extensive burns and injuries that evening. In the wake of his mother\u2019s death, Soffia wrote \u201cLa noche horrible\u201d (1863).<\/p>\n<p>Six years later, Soffia traced the duty of the firefighters in \u201cEl bombero\u201d (1869). Following his mother\u2019s death, Soffia had joined the newly established <em>Cuerpo de Bomberos<\/em> in Santiago.
