Th<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">ere was a contradiction from the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">initial<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> \u201cgasp\u201d and \u201cgod damn\u201d to the action of the zipp<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">er being pulled or forced up; momentary release but now they <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">literally <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">must<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> put everything away<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> and pretend nothing happened<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> (8). \u00a0Add<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">itionally<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">the use of \u201ctongue\u201d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> instead of teeth<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> suggests a deeper form of intimacy that is present in this relationship (8). Furtherm<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">ore, the use of \u201cleaves<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">\u201d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> referring to the lover <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">represents<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> a sense of choice- based on their maturity<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">\/age, they have more autonomy in their life and who they present to the outside world<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> (8). <\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">The\u00a0speaker might not have the ability to make that decision yet based on the age difference. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">There are also <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">descriptions<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> of \u201cpine needles\u201d and \u201cbrown leaves\u201d and how they are on\/<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">in the speaker\u2019s hair and body<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> (8). <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">These items are only described after the lover leaves the woods, w<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">hich could be telling how this relationship ha<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">s resulted in a loss of innocence<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">;<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> these elements of the woods<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> disheveled his <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">appearance<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> that he now <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW35693056 BCX0\">has to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> fix before he <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">reenters<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> the real world. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">Finally, t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">he <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">repetition<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> of \u201cleaves\u201d could <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">indicate<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> the quick turnaround of the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> intimate moment; they could not afford to enjoy each other\u2019s company.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">Overall,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">he<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> consistent descriptions of the woods could <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\">represent<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35693056 BCX0\"> the forbidden nature of the relationship. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My interpretation of this poem presents a forbidden age-gap homosexual relationship and the \u2018woods\u2019 is the only place they could be intimate.
