{"id":139,"date":"2016-09-16T02:04:08","date_gmt":"2016-09-16T06:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/lgbtqlit\/?p=139"},"modified":"2016-09-16T02:04:08","modified_gmt":"2016-09-16T06:04:08","slug":"fate-and-doom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/lgbtqlit\/2016\/09\/16\/fate-and-doom\/","title":{"rendered":"Fate and Doom"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>&#8220;No one&#8217;s fated or doomed to love anyone.<\/p>\n<p>The accidents happen, we&#8217;re not heroines,<\/p>\n<p>they happen in our lives like car crashes,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>-Poem 17 of &#8217;21 Love Poems&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>More than anything else throughout this excerpt, the phrase &#8220;fated or doomed&#8221;, stood out to me the most. \u00a0Fate and doom are both incredibly cosmic in nature,\u00a0\u00a0but have different connotations that leave them on opposite ends of the spectrum that is the overall concept of destiny. \u00a0When you think of fate in the context of love, it&#8217;s uncontrollable. \u00a0And when you think of doomed love, it&#8217;s unavoidable. \u00a0My interpretation of this poem is that the narrator is saying love is something we can&#8217;t control <em>or<\/em> avoid when it really comes down to it. \u00a0It&#8217;s almost as if this is a neutral stance on the power of love, since the narrator is so adamant about how love is really just an accident. \u00a0I feel as if this might tie a bit into Rich&#8217;s personal life and sexuality. \u00a0She spent a majority of her life in the closet, but eventually did come to terms with the fact that regardless of her straight marriage, she was just naturally attracted to women. \u00a0That realization was not characterized by\u00a0&#8220;fate&#8221; or &#8220;doom&#8221; for her, but rather an admittance that love is an unpredictable phenomenon, just like car crashes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;No one&#8217;s fated or doomed to love anyone.
