She then transitions into referencing women as a whole when she says\u00a0\u201c\u2026 or in many hands like these\u2026\u201d. \u00a0Rich then goes on to talk about\u00a0\u201c\u2026hands like these,\/ handling power-tools, or steering-wheel\u2026\u201d\u00a0physical labor oriented tasks that\u00a0would be typically attributed to men; \u00a0but Rich asserts that she\u00a0\u2018could trust\u2019 these jobs in the hands of women. \u00a0I feel here that she is not only saying that women can do the same jobs as men, but on a grander scale, that women are equal to men, and are equally capable to\u00a0\u201c\u2026pilot the\u00a0exporters rescue-ship\/ through icebergs, or piece together\/ the fine, needle-like\u00a0herds of a great krater-cup\/\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Towards the end of the\u00a0stanza, Rich references\u00a0\u201c\u2026 figures of ecstatic women\u00a0striding\/ to the <i>sibyl\u2019s<\/i> den or the <i>Eleusinian<\/i> cave-\u201c Both of these are allusions to important and\u00a0powerful females in ancient Greece and Greek mythology. \u00a0A <i>Sibyl <\/i>was a woman through which\u00a0deities would communicate oracles and prophecies. \u00a0An\u00a0<i>Eleusinian Cave <\/i>was a secret ceremonial site in ancient Greece, at which rituals were performed in honor of the Goddess Demeter, and her daughter Persephone. \u00a0I\u00a0believe Rich added this reference\u00a0because Demeter is the goddess of fertility. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cyour small hands\u00a0precisely equal to my own- only the thumb is larger, longer- in these hands\/ I could trust the world, or in many hands like these\/\u2026\u201d\u00a0 When I read this, I immediately assumed she was speaking to a another woman,\u00a0possibly a lover, but\u00a0initially\u00a0a specific person rather than addressing women in general.
