University of Malaga lecturer, Rafael Dur\u00e1n Munoz, explained the nuances of a multiculturalist, assimilationist and inter-culturalist approach. Though both France and Spain strive to address inequality amongst their diverse populations, their approaches vary greatly across these three.<\/p>\n<p>In France, for instance, we observed an assimilationist approach. Munoz explained that though Sarcozy claimed multiculturalism failed in France, it actually never existed. According to Munoz, before you are a Muslim, you are French. This explains why in public spaces like a school, people cannot wear religious symbols like a headscarf. Schools are considered secular places that should be free from religion.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_526\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/mediterranean-migration\/files\/2013\/03\/3bKHW3rJRDJ2gSAk3mGYk4Q-6PvNBEkruk1qO-rAkpY.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-526\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-526\" alt=\"Movement Against Intolerance\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/mediterranean-migration\/files\/2013\/03\/3bKHW3rJRDJ2gSAk3mGYk4Q-6PvNBEkruk1qO-rAkpY-225x300.jpeg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/mediterranean-migration\/files\/2013\/03\/3bKHW3rJRDJ2gSAk3mGYk4Q-6PvNBEkruk1qO-rAkpY-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/mediterranean-migration\/files\/2013\/03\/3bKHW3rJRDJ2gSAk3mGYk4Q-6PvNBEkruk1qO-rAkpY-600x800.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/mediterranean-migration\/files\/2013\/03\/3bKHW3rJRDJ2gSAk3mGYk4Q-6PvNBEkruk1qO-rAkpY.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Movement Against Intolerance<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Spain takes a more intercultural approach. According to an interculturalist, you are free to express things like your religion or culture as long as you do not violate any human rights. This means that unlike in France, a Muslim girl would be allowed to wear a veil to school. Munoz explains that \u2018people are not part of us because they act like us. They are part of us because we respect them\u2019. People should not simply co-exist, separated by ethnic ghettos, but should instead live together.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/mediterranean-migration\/files\/2013\/03\/IMG_6068.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-527\" alt=\"Mediterraneo\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/mediterranean-migration\/files\/2013\/03\/IMG_6068-300x300.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/mediterranean-migration\/files\/2013\/03\/IMG_6068-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/mediterranean-migration\/files\/2013\/03\/IMG_6068-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/mediterranean-migration\/files\/2013\/03\/IMG_6068-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/mediterranean-migration\/files\/2013\/03\/IMG_6068-800x800.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/mediterranean-migration\/files\/2013\/03\/IMG_6068.jpg 1603w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Like Munoz, lecturer Victor Manuel Martin Solbes, condoned an inter-culturalist approach to diversity and specifically focused on inter-culturalism within the classroom. This approach must be part of education as a whole, and not just included in one activity or one heritage day. Within the classroom, he believes diversity should be visible and celebrated.<\/p>\n<p>I have also always appreciated how in the US, we have free expressions of religion and culture. That being said, I never considered what would be the French criticism. Our so called \u201cmelting pot\u201d is actually marked by ethnic ghettos and inequality.
