As the reader has seen earlier, the Confederacy was an outspoken advocate for slavery and stood firmly on the grounds that it was essential for the economic safety of the South and ingrained in their society on the basis of black racial inferiority. Jefferson Davis’ Vice President confirmed that it was the reason for the conflict between the North and the South. Yet, here Davis is flatly denying this. He is promoting the Lost Cause and his sentiments, along with other prominent Confederate leaders, were essential in creating this myth.
