This 444 page document was compiled by the Office of Strategic Services in 1943-1945 in order to illustrate Greek political tendencies and membership during the war as the US government was looking at all ethnic groups closely. The document was made to not only understand the evolving political situation in Greece itself and the rising Communist factions but also in order to illustrate the influence of Greek immigrants on the American Press, the Greek territorial aspirations, Greek immigrant pressures to send food aid to Greece and also the developing problem of Greek seamen. In the US Greek American’s were divided between the Monarchists and the Communists with the Greek-American press tending to side Monarchist. Furthermore, given that immigration was halted during the war time and had been on the slow since the Immigration Act of 1924 most Greeks coming into the country did so illegally as seamen who stayed behind when their ships went home.
The US government, specifically through the Office of Strategic Services, compiled a report on a series of ethnic groups in the United States. A part of the report compiled from 1942-1945 detailed multiple facets of Greeks and Greek immigration over 342 pages. The first part discusses the character of Greek Americans and how contrary to other Balkans they were as being Greek before their political or social loyalties. It also discussed the unquestionable loyalty of Greeks to American freedom and how Greek-Americans had an important role to play in post-war Europe. There were was also a discussion of the still lingering sentiments of resentment towards Italians after WWII. The source detailed how important the Greek Orthodox Church was in these Greek-American enclaves and how for many second generation immigrants who no longer spoke Greek it was their only connection to their homeland.
