The Jewish people, from their time in Egypt all the way through to the present, have never had a large population or foothold anywhere.  The Jewish population in the US in the early 1900’s was just over 1.5 million, and most of these people, over 900,000, lived in New York State.  Jews living in the city of New York could expect to find unemployment, poor treatment, and bad living conditions in tenements.  If a tenement allowed Jews, there could be up to 20 families living in one five-story building.  Jewish migration to the US increased leading up to the year 1900, and rose to double its previous normal rate in the year 1900.  After they entered the 20th century, the number of jews even still doubled, to a rate of about 100,00 per year for  a few years.  This increase in immigration amounted to about 15% of all immigration from the time of 1899 to 1915.  In total, about 1.5 million Jews immigrated to the United States before 1917.
