{"id":2546,"date":"2010-05-22T11:12:38","date_gmt":"2010-05-22T15:12:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/norwichhumanities\/?p=2546"},"modified":"2010-05-22T11:12:39","modified_gmt":"2010-05-22T15:12:39","slug":"red-ball-and-from-the-beatles-to-bowie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/norwichhumanities\/2010\/05\/red-ball-and-from-the-beatles-to-bowie\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Ball and From the Beatles to Bowie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Starting on 7 May and going until later this evening, the Norfolk and Norwich Festival has taken over the city of Norwich.\u00a0 With moving art exhibits, temporary installments in the Norwich Castle Museum, and musical and performance events taking place all over, I made it my goal to experience the culture of the Festival.\u00a0 Being a poor college student, I fully admit that I tended to stick to the cheaper forms of entertainment!\u00a0 Some of the most interesting that I attended were the search for the Red Ball and From the Beatles to Bowie exhibition in the Castle.<\/p>\n<p>There are no illusions to what the <a title=\"Red Ball\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eveningnews24.co.uk\/content\/eveningnews24\/norwich-news\/story.aspx?brand=ENOnline&amp;category=News&amp;tBrand=ENOnline&amp;tCategory=xNews&amp;itemid=NOED21%20May%202010%2018:33:20:033\" target=\"_blank\">Red Bal<\/a>l is.\u00a0 It is a 15-foot inflatable red ball that has traveled all over the world and is making its UK debut in style at the Norfolk and Norwich Festival.\u00a0 Every day of the Festival, the ball has been in a different location around the city.\u00a0 I knew that the Red Ball was supposed to be coming to Norwich through my research on the Festival, but I had kind of forgotten about it until I spotted it in York Alley from the 25 bus on my way back from the train station and, oddly enough, York.\u00a0 I then made it my goal to find the Red Ball in the city as often as possible.\u00a0 Alas, it often eluded me.<\/p>\n<p>I was lucky enough to spot the Red Ball in five different locations and spent around three hours wandering around Norwich trying to find it.\u00a0 Aside from seeing it in York Alley on 9 May, I also located the Red Ball at Pull\u2019s Ferry on the 13<sup>th<\/sup>, St. Peter Mancroft on the 18<sup>th<\/sup>, Norwich Castle on the 20<sup>th<\/sup>, St. Gregory\u2019s Alley on the 21<sup>st<\/sup>, and randomly stumbled upon it on UEA\u2019s campus at the Sainsbury Centre on the 19<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 The goal of the organizers of the Festival was the have the Red Ball in places that were both visible and important to the history of the city.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"From the Beatles to Bowie\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npg.org.uk:8080\/beatles\/exhib.htm\" target=\"_blank\">From the Beatles to Bowie exhibition<\/a>, formerly at the National Portrait Gallery, was a celebration of British music in the 1960s.\u00a0 Although the exhibit did not come to Norwich for the sole purpose of the Festival, it was brought in conjunction with the Norfolk and Norwich Festival and can be found among the events in the NNF10 catalogue.\u00a0 Thankfully, entrance to this section of the Norwich Castle Museum was quite cheap at around \u00a32.50.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition had a logical flow.\u00a0 It was primarily a series of photographs of popular British artists laid out chronologically with additional information at the beginning of each year of the 1960s.\u00a0 Being a lover of classic rock, I was particularly pleased with the sections devoted to the <a title=\"Hello \" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Qf2S7kKLtEQ\" target=\"_blank\">Beatles<\/a>, <a title=\"Pink Floyd\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Lwj6iC9kgSw\">Pink Floyd<\/a>, and <a title=\"Jethro Tull\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YlV1TkeuR5U\" target=\"_blank\">Jethro Tull<\/a>.\u00a0 The use of photographs made the changing fashion and musical styles of the artists very clear throughout the decade.\u00a0 For example, the clean-cut, peppy style that was popular at the beginning of the 1960s was very different from the shabbier, darker style that was more prevalent towards the end of the decade.\u00a0 Over all, the exhibition showed the impact that music had on culture and change throughout the 1960s in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Red Ball Time &#8211;
