On Friday, a video <\/span>with antisemitic content came to light among our Dickinson community<\/span>. As the <\/span>center for Jewish Life on campus<\/span>, it is our duty to speak out when we see <\/span>antisemitism a<\/span>n<\/span>y<\/span>where, but especially among our student body<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Too often, <\/span>acts of bigotry<\/span> are couched as humorous, as \u201cjust jokes\u201d or as \u201csatire,\u201d but the effect is clear to those affected and always very serious. <\/span>These statements<\/span> are meant to <\/span>intimidate, and <\/span>often <\/span>cause anxiety and fear. <\/span>At a time when antisemitic incidents <\/span>in the United States <\/span>are at their highest point since 1979, and antisemitic assaults and murders are at an <\/span>all-time<\/span> high, we cannot afford to take any incident of bias lightly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When people <\/span>make antisemitic jokes<\/span>,<\/span> t<\/span>hey send the message that <\/span>the<\/span>y take the<\/span> concerns of the Jewish community <\/span>lightly, and that <\/span>they consider <\/span>Jewish <\/span>voices a<\/span>s<\/span> unworthy of attention.<\/span> But we are <\/span>grateful that this has not been the response writ large. So many among the Dickinson community have spoken out against this incident, from President Ensign to every student who brought the video to the attention of our Bias Response Team. <\/span>We are grateful <\/span>for everyone who <\/span>continues to take antisemitism seriously.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For our Jewish students, an email will go out on Monday with information about holding space to talk about <\/span>your <\/span>feelings and about how best to respond to incidents like these. We hope that <\/span>this will help you know that you are supported in this time. And for the rest of the Dickinson community, we at the Asbell Center are happy to be a resource. If you want to learn more about antisemitism and how to ally against it, please reach out. It is only by standing together that we can move forward and build a more j<\/span>ust world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
