{"id":137,"date":"2016-03-10T10:36:59","date_gmt":"2016-03-10T15:36:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/landishouse\/?p=137"},"modified":"2016-03-10T10:42:06","modified_gmt":"2016-03-10T15:42:06","slug":"womens-history-month-celebration-and-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/officeofequityandinclusivity\/2016\/03\/10\/womens-history-month-celebration-and-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s Herstory Month: Celebration and Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>March is Women\u2019s History Month or, as we like to call it here at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/wgrc\">Women\u2019s and Gender Resource Center<\/a>, Women\u2019s HERstory month. It\u2019s an opportunity to tell women\u2019s stories, recognize women\u2019s accomplishments, and learn about women who have been ignored in conventional historical narratives. You can read about the origins of Women\u2019s History month in <a href=\"http:\/\/womenshistorymonth.gov\/about.html\">this summary<\/a> from the Library of Congress. This is a month to celebrate the accomplishments of women and to take stock of the challenges that remain. As President Obama notes in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2016\/02\/29\/presidential-proclamation-womens-history-month-2016\">Presidential Proclamation for Women\u2019s History Month 2016<\/a>, we have made great progress toward gender equity <em>and<\/em> we still have a long way to go. He calls us to \u201cuphold the responsibility that falls on all of us &#8212; regardless of gender &#8212; and fight for equal opportunity for our daughters as well as our sons.\u201d In the Proclamation, the President notes some of the areas where we have not achieved equality and justice, including the lack of equal pay, the underrepresentation of women in STEM, etc.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-146\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/landishouse\/files\/2016\/03\/Ghani-300x260.jpg\" alt=\"Ghani\" width=\"300\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/officeofequityandinclusivity\/files\/2016\/03\/Ghani-300x260.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/officeofequityandinclusivity\/files\/2016\/03\/Ghani.jpg 419w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>International Women\u2019s Day is also commemorated during Women\u2019s History Month on March 8. Ms. Magazine published a blog with <a href=\"http:\/\/msmagazine.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/09\/6-reasons-we-still-need-international-womens-day\/\">some of the reasons<\/a> we still need International Women\u2019s Day, as well as some of their <a href=\"http:\/\/msmagazine.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/08\/10-international-womens-day-tweets-that-deserve-an-rt\/\">favorite tweets<\/a> from the day.<\/p>\n<p>There are so many areas where entrenched sexism impacts gender progress. Despite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ruchikatulshyan\/2016\/03\/08\/gender-equity-boosts-business-so-why-havent-we-reached-parity-yet\/#138f9c937bb0\">evidence<\/a> demonstrating that women\u2019s advancement creates more success for businesses, there are only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catalyst.org\/knowledge\/women-ceos-sp-500\">20 women CEOs in the S&amp;P 500<\/a>. Companies with higher numbers of women on their boards of directors are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catalyst.org\/issues\/diversity-matters\">also more profitable<\/a>. These examples make clear that even the power of the capitalist profit motive doesn\u2019t overcome patterns of exclusion and marginalization.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern holds true in politics as well. Women comprise <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cawp.rutgers.edu\/women-us-congress-2015\">just 19.4%<\/a> of the United States Congress, although the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/cen2010\/briefs\/c2010br-03.pdf\">2010 Census documents<\/a> that women are more than half of the population in the US. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.american.edu\/spa\/faculty\/lawless.cfm\">Jennifer Lawless and Richard Fox<\/a> have written extensively about why women don\u2019t run for office, as well as how they are treated when they do. In the academy, women are overrepresented in non-tenure and tenure-track positions and underrepresented in tenured positions. Only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catalyst.org\/knowledge\/women-academia\">26% of college presidents<\/a> in the US are women.<\/p>\n<p>In all arenas, these numbers get worse if you disaggregate by race\/ethnicity and look at the data on women of color.<\/p>\n<p>These patterns of underrepresentation are also impacted by violence and harassment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/features\/anita-sarkeesian-gamergate-interview-20141017\">GamerGate<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/10\/sports\/erin-andrews-dangers-of-being-female-sportscaster.html?referer=http:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/09\/nytnow\/your-wednesday-evening-briefing-bernie-sanders-donald-trump-solar-eclipse.html&amp;_r=0\">harassment of female sportscasters<\/a>, harassment by <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/Berkeley-Is-Under-Fire-Again\/235653\">law school deans<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/The-Subtle-Ways-Gender-Gaps\/235598\">persistent undervaluing of women\u2019s contributions<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/06\/opinion\/sunday\/she-wanted-to-do-her-research-he-wanted-to-talk-feelings.html\">harassment in the sciences<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/08\/03\/arts\/colin-mcginn-philosopher-to-leave-his-post.html?pagewanted=1&amp;_r=0\">harassment in philosophy<\/a> \u2013 the list could (and does) go on.<\/p>\n<p>And, for those who think that this problem will be fixed once millennials ascend to positions of power in the workplace, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catalyst.org\/knowledge\/revealing-real-millennials-workplace-gender-bias\">research by Catalyst<\/a> shows substantial discrepancies in perceptions about gender bias among millennials in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>In commemorating Women\u2019s Herstory Month we want to note not just the problems that remain, but actions that move us forward. Catalyst compiled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catalyst.org\/system\/files\/iwd2016.pdf\">a number of successes and memorable steps<\/a> in our progress towards equality over the past year. <a href=\"http:\/\/feministfrequency.com\/about\/\">Feminist Frequency\u2019s<\/a> Anita Sarkeesian\u2019s next project is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/articles\/feminist-frequencys-anita-sarkeesian-announces-new\/1100-6435504\/\">Ordinary Women<\/a>, which \u201cwill document the stories of women you may not have learned about in your history classes, including Murasaki Shikibu, Emma Goldman, Ching Shih, Ada Lovelace, and Ida B. Wells.\u201d Hillary Clinton is a strong contender for the Democratic presidential nomination. Carly Fiorina is a former contender in the Republican primary. There is <a href=\"http:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2016\/03\/the-costs-of-inequality-for-women-progress-until-they-get-near-power\/\">some evidence<\/a> that behavioral \u201cnudges\u201d can have an impact in changing cultural norms and expectations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-143\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/landishouse\/files\/2016\/03\/Rivera-300x277.jpg\" alt=\"Rivera\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/officeofequityandinclusivity\/files\/2016\/03\/Rivera-300x277.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/officeofequityandinclusivity\/files\/2016\/03\/Rivera.jpg 385w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>It is also important to recognize that the continuing celebration of Women\u2019s History Month is not unproblematic. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bustle.com\/articles\/146556-im-a-queer-trans-woman-and-womens-history-month-erases-me-from-history\">Some argue<\/a> that it reinforces the gender binary and makes trans women invisible. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/barbara-sostaita-\/this-womens-history-month-i-refuse-to-celebrate-your-feminism_b_9352370.html\">Others argue<\/a> that the focus is on white women and their accomplishments, minimizing or erasing the accomplishments of women of color. There is much truth in both of these criticisms and we must all be committed to recognizing and honoring the successes of everyone who identifies as a woman <em>and<\/em> interrupting the rigidity of the gender binary and all that it constrains.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-142\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/landishouse\/files\/2016\/03\/Kennedy-300x268.jpg\" alt=\"Kennedy\" width=\"300\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/officeofequityandinclusivity\/files\/2016\/03\/Kennedy-300x268.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/officeofequityandinclusivity\/files\/2016\/03\/Kennedy.jpg 411w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>As part of our Women\u2019s Herstory Month celebration, we partnered with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/72\/popel_shaw_center_for_race_and_ethnicity\">Popel Shaw Center for Race and Ethnicity<\/a> on a campaign to highlight Unsung Women of Color. Our partners at the library organized a display to highlight Unsung Women of Color, International Women\u2019s Day, women in politics and more.<\/p>\n<p>On March 30, we\u2019ll be hosting Jessica Grounds to talk with us about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/info\/20229\/women_s_and_gender_resource_center\/1858\/programs_and_events\/2\">Gender and the 2016 Election<\/a>.
