{"id":4303,"date":"2014-11-24T00:09:47","date_gmt":"2014-11-24T05:09:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/quallsk\/?p=4303"},"modified":"2015-01-14T11:36:44","modified_gmt":"2015-01-14T16:36:44","slug":"russia-as-a-multi-ethnic-empire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/quallsk\/2014\/11\/24\/russia-as-a-multi-ethnic-empire\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia as a Multi-Ethnic Empire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the latter half of the nineteenth century, \u00a0Russia experienced a massive shift in population in a number of ways. \u00a0From ethnicity, to occupation, Russia became more modern than it had ever been before.<\/p>\n<p>Kaeppler talk about the expansiveness of Russia&#8217;s ethnicity. \u00a0The vast array of backgrounds was established by the 1897 Russian Empire census, the only official one they had ever taken at that time. \u00a0In the census, it was revealed that the Russian ethnicity\/ nationality made up only 44.3% of the entire Empire. \u00a0The other 55.7% was a large mixture of\u00a0ethnicities; \u00a0This was shocking when the Tsar and government declared that two thirds of the empire was of Russian nationality. \u00a0The sheer number of nationalities, ethnicities, religions, and languages mentioned in Kappeler&#8217;s article is a testament to how diverse the Russian Empire was.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the ethnic diversity of Russia, there was also an increase in agricultural\u00a0diversity. \u00a0With the freeing of serfs in 1861, Russia was undergoing a large amount of economic change. \u00a0Specific regions were beginning to focus on more commercial crops and crops that were more specific the the region they were being grown in. \u00a0For example, the Poles focused on cultivating Tobacco, while Middle Asia grew vineyards and rice. \u00a0This was only possible as trading was much more expansive and farming was more versatile.<\/p>\n<p>Was this diversity a positive or negative aspect of the Russian Empire?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the latter half of the nineteenth century, \u00a0Russia experienced a massive shift in population in a number of ways. \u00a0From ethnicity, to occupation, Russia became more modern than it had ever been before.
