{"id":5268,"date":"2015-04-09T21:03:54","date_gmt":"2015-04-10T01:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/quallsk\/?p=5268"},"modified":"2016-02-01T14:14:28","modified_gmt":"2016-02-01T19:14:28","slug":"sputnik-generation-and-gender-roles-regarding-interviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/quallsk\/2015\/04\/09\/sputnik-generation-and-gender-roles-regarding-interviews\/","title":{"rendered":"Sputnik Generation and Gender Roles Regarding Interviews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The interviews of Natalia and Gennadii were similar in the way the interviewer approached each question, however also extremely different in terms of the answers provided by both interviewees. \u00a0Natalia and Gennadii, though they had different upbringings, were both citizens of the Soviet Union with relatively similar class status in a classless state.<\/p>\n<p>Both Natalia and Gennadii recognized the type of family or social class that was drawn to their town and School No. 42. \u00a0Natalia stated that many of the school children had parents who were \u201cof the party or a party official\u201d and the questions asked of her seemed to be much more social and cultural related. \u00a0Gennadii\u2019s interview on the other hand seemed extremely political, focusing mainly on questions such as \u201cCan you tell me what you thought of Lenin and Stalin?\u201d or his experience with and opinion on Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t tell if Gennadii\u2019s interview was so different from Natalia\u2019s solely because of gender, however that is what it felt like. \u00a0Gennadii\u2019s answers were relatively short compared to Natalia\u2019s. He was also extremely careful with what he said concerning politics, for instance when asked about his views on Lenin he said: \u201cYou know, regarding Lenin, I probably can\u2019t say.\u201d \u00a0This could have either legitimately been a lack of conviction or it was retreat from a question that seemed too nosey.<\/p>\n<p>These two chapters left me with a few questions regarding how journalists or novelists approached people from the Soviet Union and how they responded. \u00a0Did Soviet\u2019s see these interviews as \u201cdigging\u201d for information and took offense? \u00a0Was it simply the people interviewed for these chapters which made it seem restrictive?
