Although our readings on \u201corientalism\u201d focused on a more\u00a0<\/span>large-scale<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>description of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>concept of \u201cothering\u201d a particular group of people, I believe that this same<\/span>\u00a0idea can be applied to much more specific<\/span>\u00a0and nonobjective<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>circumstances.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>For example,\u00a0<\/span>when I first arrived\u00a0<\/span>at<\/span>\u00a0Dickinson<\/span>\u00a0in 2017,<\/span>\u00a0although<\/span>\u00a0I did not vary too much in appearance from the rest of the student<\/span>s<\/span>, it did not take long before I began<\/span>\u00a0to feel \u201cout of place\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether it was in mandatory first-year activities, or in class, it seemed as though most students had attended high school at a pre<\/span>stigious boarding, or private school somewhere in the North East<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0whereas I\u00a0<\/span>attended\u00a0<\/span>public school in southern Virginia<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I became very self-conscious about\u00a0<\/span>my qualifications to be at Dickinson, which resulted in hyper analyzing my comments in class<\/span>\u00a0as to not appear\u00a0<\/span>as having less academic capability<\/span>\u00a0than the other studen<\/span>ts.\u00a0<\/span>Much of this was self-inflicted, however, I had enough experiences\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>solidify\u00a0<\/span>these assumptions that I had made.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The temporary results of this were\u00a0<\/span>falsely\u00a0<\/span>viewing those who are from wealthy areas,\u00a0<\/span>particularly cities, as having unsubstantiated confidence about<\/span>\u00a0who they were compared to others, and detached from reality. This of course, was\u00a0<\/span>a gross generalization and without firm grounds<\/span>. It did not take long before I realized that this perspective was false, and subconsciously\u00a0<\/span>inducing stress as by \u201cothering\u201d people around me<\/span>, as<\/span>\u00a0I was actually \u201cothering\u201d myself.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
