{"id":9,"date":"2021-02-05T00:06:02","date_gmt":"2021-02-05T00:06:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/robinjac\/?p=9"},"modified":"2021-02-05T00:06:02","modified_gmt":"2021-02-05T00:06:02","slug":"where-i-live-where-they-live","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/robinjac\/2021\/02\/05\/where-i-live-where-they-live\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Where I live, Where they Live&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although I have never travelled to the Middle East,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">my experience\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">abroad, it has become<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0very\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">apparent the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">way in which\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stereotypes\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">alter or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0misguide one<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0perception of reality<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0In other words, we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">create reasons for certain behaviors or occurrences through the lenses of our own experience.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It would be unreasonable to say that in order to minimize barriers of understanding between\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the USA and the Middle East\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we must eliminate our predispositions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, a good start would be to reflect on what our predispositions are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For example, in my\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">experience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0growing up in the United States,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I have come t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0associate my count<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ies government with leadership and stability<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Despite the significant faults that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">many of us in America recognize within our institutions,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I am optimistic about ou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r\u00a0potential for improvement.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0However, citizens of many countries within the Middle East\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">might<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ave less confidence\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in institutions\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as a result of failing states, exploited gover<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nments, and perhaps even negative interactions with Americans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another strategy toward understanding is to put an effort toward accepting cultura<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">l\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">differences and recognizing that \u201cpeople are people\u201d. It is very important that we do not simply regard someone as \u201cother\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as this can be extremely divisive and unproductive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
