{"id":23,"date":"2011-06-07T19:25:18","date_gmt":"2011-06-07T19:25:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/?p=23"},"modified":"2012-01-26T22:58:35","modified_gmt":"2012-01-26T22:58:35","slug":"mary-wollstonecraft-shelley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/2011\/06\/07\/mary-wollstonecraft-shelley\/","title":{"rendered":"Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/files\/2011\/06\/Mary_Shelley_by_Reginald_Easton.1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1227\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/files\/2011\/06\/Mary_Shelley_by_Reginald_Easton.1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/files\/2011\/06\/Mary_Shelley_by_Reginald_Easton.1.jpg 269w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/files\/2011\/06\/Mary_Shelley_by_Reginald_Easton.1-238x300.jpg 238w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/a>Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley<\/strong> (1797-1851) was the daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin, the wife of <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/2011\/06\/07\/percy-bysshe-shelley\/\">Percy Bysshe Shelley<\/a>, and the author of one of the most widely read and often redacted novels of the past two centuries. <a title=\"In the Poetry Lab with Dr. Frankenstein\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/2011\/06\/10\/in-the-poetry-lab-with-dr-frankenstein\/\"><em>Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus<\/em> was born out of a series of conversations she had during the summer of 1816 with Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and Dr. John Polidori.<\/a> Mary cites conversations between <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/2011\/06\/07\/percy-bysshe-shelley\/\">Shelley<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/2011\/06\/07\/lord-byron\/\">Byron<\/a> about <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/2011\/06\/07\/erasmus-darwin\/\">Erasmus Darwin<\/a> (&#8220;they talked about the experiments of <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/2011\/06\/07\/erasmus-darwin\/\">Dr. Darwin<\/a>&#8220;) and <a title=\"Luigi Galvani and \u201cElectric\u201d Romanticism\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/2011\/06\/10\/luigi-galvani-and-electric-romanticism\/\">Luigi Galvani<\/a> (&#8220;perhaps a corpse would be re-animated; galvanism had given token of such things&#8221;) as sources for her own idea of a reanimated human (&#8220;perhaps the component parts of a creature might be manufactured, brought together, and endued with vital warmth&#8221;) in her introduction to the 1831 edition of the novel (first edition 1818).<\/p>\n<p>When asked to explain why he has created a monstrous life form (one that would eventually destroy him), Mary&#8217;s Victor Frankenstein offers an explanation based on the concept of &#8220;species.&#8221; &#8220;A new species would bless me as its creator,&#8221; he says to Captain Walton in the opening pages of the novel.\u00a0In 1816,\u00a0<a title=\"Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/2011\/06\/07\/mary-wollstonecraft-shelley\/\">Mary Shelley<\/a>\u00a0penned a famous sentence that offered a natural historical explanation for\u00a0<a title=\"In the Poetry Lab with Dr. Frankenstein\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/2011\/06\/10\/in-the-poetry-lab-with-dr-frankenstein\/\">Victor Frankenstein\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0desire to create a new sort of living being: \u201cA new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me\u201d (Robinson I: 85). The line appears in the original 1818 edition (Hunter 32) of the novel and unaltered in the revised version of 1831 (Smith 55). In Charles Robinson\u2019s recent facsimile edition of the manuscript, \u201cspecies\u201d appears to have been Mary Shelley\u2019s third word choice after \u201ccreation\u201d and \u201cexistence\u201d (I: 85). Much recent scholarship has emphasized Mary Shelley\u2019s biography and state of mind during the Frankenstein summer. Additional work on the novel has analyzed the scientific advances of the era; both Galvani and Volta were experimenting with electrical impulses and muscular contractions during the 1790s. Less attention has been given to an equally important question: what precisely did Mary Shelley think the word \u201cspecies\u201d meant in 1816, and how did her sense of the concept of species relate to a wider Romantic natural history?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1228\" style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/files\/2011\/06\/220px-Frontispiece_to_Frankenstein_1831.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1228\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1228\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/files\/2011\/06\/220px-Frontispiece_to_Frankenstein_1831.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"286\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1228\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frontispiece, 1831 edition of Frankenstein.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mary clearly sees this attempt to create life as connected to the creation of a species. Of course, Victor does not really create a new species at all; he creates a hybrid, a human being composed of the parts of other humans and other animals, since some of his raw materials come from the &#8220;slaughterhouse.&#8221;\u00a0 Mary&#8217;s creature presumably lacks a soul, at least in the minds of most of her 1818 readers. But when Victor considers the &#8220;race of demons&#8221; that might populate the world if he goes through with his plan to create a female companion for the &#8220;wretch,&#8221; he clearly places <a title=\"Human \u201cmonsters\u201d and reproductive mysteries\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/2011\/06\/10\/human-monsters-and-reproductive-mysteries\/\">monster reproductive biology<\/a> at the center of his own anxieties. As readers, we may well wonder why he does not merely create a &#8220;sterile&#8221; female. We may also wonder why he created a fertile male creature in the first place. If he has the power to create life, surely he has the power to create individuals unable to reproduce. Or perhaps this textual confusion reflects 18-year-old Mary Shelley&#8217;s confusions about reproductive biology&#8211;even though she had already given birth to one child that died only days after it was born. All such reproductive anxieties however, point to wider issues and questions about the problem of speciation in the Romantic era.<\/p>\n<p>By the time Mary Shelley claims that a \u201cnew species\u201d might bless a human creator for its existence, Romantic poets and writers were hinting at the biological connectedness of all living things, even without the precise scientific details that would allow them to explain such links. When\u00a0<a title=\"Samuel Taylor Coleridge\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/2011\/06\/07\/samuel-taylor-coleridge\/\">Coleridge<\/a>\u00a0refers to the \u201cone Life within us and abroad, \/ Which meets all motion and becomes its soul, \/ A light in sound, a sound-like power in light,\u201d (\u201cThe Eolian Harp,\u201d 26-29), he is clearly imagining a naturalized version of divine unity. Erasmus Darwin might have called Coleridge\u2019s \u201cone Life\u201d a \u201cvegetative\u201d energy that pervades and links all living things (\u201call objects of all thought \/ And rolls through all things\u201d as\u00a0<a title=\"William Wordsworth\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/romnat\/2011\/06\/07\/william-wordsworth\/\">Wordsworth<\/a>\u00a0would add [&#8220;Tintern Abbey&#8221; 102-03]). In \u201cThe Eolian Harp,\u201d Coleridge imagines \u201call of animated nature\u201d as \u201corganic Harps diversely fram\u2019d,\u201d and he refers to the animating principle as \u201cPlastic and vast.\u201d The phrase \u201canimated nature\u201d was used widely by natural historians to distinguish those aspects of creation that were responsible for their own motion (<em>anima<\/em>: breath, wind) from inanimate (spiritless) objects. The phrase also hinted at some unifying vital principle that separated living from nonliving things.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Victor Frankenstein&#8217;s creature does not bless him &#8220;as its creator.&#8221; In fact, the wretch turns on the creator and destroys him&#8211;as well as everyone he loves&#8211;not because the monster is inherently evil, but because the &#8220;monster&#8221; never receives love from his creator, or even a name. The human creator Victor never shows sufficient concern for the life he has made, much less for other human (or animate) lives around him.
