Jane Costlow
Professor and Chair of Environmental Studies, Bates College
Prof. Costlow teaches courses on environmental literature, disaster narratives, and visual cultures, with an emphasis on Russian literature and culture. She has travelled extensively to Russia and the Soviet Union, both for individual research and with students. She is the author of the award-winning book, Heart-Pine Russia: Walking and Writing the Nineteenth-Century Forest (Cornell U Press, 2013). Her talk will look at the environmental and cultural legacy of Soviet dam building, and on the role of water in the work of Soviet filmmaker Larisa Shepitko.
