Students in the fall 2018 advanced-level course on Russian film and new media Skyped with students from the Russian State University for the Humanities (RSUH) last week. The topic of the conversation was “contemporary television.” Students talked in Russian about what they are currently watching, viewing practices in Russia and the US, and how the structure of television series differs from traditional film form. RSUH is Dickinson’s partner institution in Moscow, which means that many of the students who participate in these monthly Skype sessions will later meet Dickinson students when they study abroad in Moscow for the summer, semester, or year. Introductory and Intermediate students also participate in Russian-language Skype discussions, conversing on topics like holidays, food culture, and student life in Russia.
