Two Dickinson Russian majors presented their original research at the University of Pittsburgh\u2019s Undergraduate Research Symposium on May 5, 2020.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Undergraduate Research Symposium<\/strong>\u00a0is an annual event since 2002 with the goal of providing undergraduate students with advanced research experiences and opportunities to develop presentation skills in a traditional conference format. After the initial acceptance of their papers, selected participants receive feedback from University Pittsburgh graduate students. Participants are then grouped into panels according to their research topics.\u00a0On the day of the conference, participants give 10- to 15-minute presentations based on their research to a panel of faculty and graduate students. This year, due to COVID-19 closures, the Symposium took place online. The proceedings will be published in summer 2020, enabling presenters to share their work with an even wider audience.<\/p>\n

Dickinson students have been traveling to this conference since 2010 to present their research. This year, Dickinson students presented the following papers:<\/p>\n

Clara Giorgis (Russian and International Studies): \u201c\u2018Their Mother Tongue\u2019: How Russia\u2019s Language Policy Gives a Voice to Nationalism\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Grace\u00a0<\/span>Ingle (Russian, Middle East Studies, and Security Studies): \u201cGeorgia\u2019s European Past and Future?: Evaluating the Republic of Georgia\u2019s EU & NATO Aspirations\u201d<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

Clara conducted research for her paper during her fall 2019 semester abroad on the Dickinson-in-Moscow program. Grace\u2019s project is part of her senior honors thesis research for her Russian major. In the winter of 2020, Grace traveled to Tbilisi, Georgia on a Durden Research Grant from Dickinson College to conduct research in the Georgian National Museum.<\/p>\n
