{"id":2184,"date":"2020-05-22T09:24:40","date_gmt":"2020-05-22T13:24:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/russian\/?p=2184"},"modified":"2020-05-22T09:24:40","modified_gmt":"2020-05-22T13:24:40","slug":"dickinson-college-faculty-members-select-recipient-of-their-highest-honor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/russian\/2020\/05\/22\/dickinson-college-faculty-members-select-recipient-of-their-highest-honor\/","title":{"rendered":"Dickinson College Faculty Members Select Recipient of Their Highest Honor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/site\/custom_scripts\/dc_faculty_profile_index.php?fac=deblasia\">Alyssa DeBlasio<\/a>, associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/131\/russian\">Russian<\/a>, recently received the 2019-20 Distinguished Teaching Award, which recognizes excellence in teaching and is the highest honor given to a Dickinson faculty member. Recipients are determined by faculty voting and approved by the president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a real honor to be recognized by my colleagues for this award, especially at a time when our normal ways of teaching have been uprooted,\u201d said DeBlasio. \u201cI\u2019m very lucky to be part of Dickinson\u2019s network of innovative, internationally recognized language teachers and researchers, who managed to do the impossible this semester\u2014to take language courses online (in 12 languages!) with only a week\u2019s notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeBlasio\u2019s students laud her \u201ccommitment to fairness and care for all students,\u201d and describe her classes as \u201cintellectually challenging.\u201d For the past five years, she has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/news\/article\/2117\/how_do_you_say_ash_cloud_in_russian\">worked with students<\/a> to compile a digital, bilingual <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/vapetrushevsky\/\">archive<\/a> of the diaries of Vladimir Petrushevsky, Russia\u2019s first volcanologist. The translation work is part of her yearly course, Workshop in Translation,\u00a0a senior seminar in practical translation skills. DeBlasio also has recently taught courses in philosophy and literature, Russian popular culture and media (in Russian) and Russian film of the Putin era, and she led the development of a certificate in Teaching for the Digital Age\u00a0on behalf of Dickinson\u2019s Moscow partner, Russian State University for the Humanities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs one would wish of a Distinguished Teacher, she brings students into her scholarly world,\u201d said Neil Weissman, provost and dean of the college. \u201cAs an advisor, she carries her students elsewhere as well\u2014to impressive graduate school placements, to Fulbright scholarships\u00a0and to engaging careers. Through her work with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/1419\/dickinson_in_russia\">our program in Moscow<\/a>, she adds strength to the college\u2019s character as a global campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In service to the college, DeBlasio has chaired the Russian department since 2015 and contributes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/98\/film_studies\">film studies<\/a> program and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/42\/philosophy\">philosophy<\/a> department.
