This year\u2019s recipients include two graduating seniors, a recent alumna and a senior alum administrator, each representing a strong commitment to global engagement and cross-cultural learning.<\/p>\n<h3>Amina West &#8217;25<\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"float_right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/images\/Amina_West_edit.jpg\" alt=\"amina west poses\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Amina West &#8217;25 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/32\/american_studies\">American studies<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/131\/russian\">Russian<\/a>) has been awarded an English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Latvia.\u00a0She\u2019ll return to Daugavpils, where she previously studied Russian through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat experience\u00a0had a profound impact on my life,\u201d West says on the program that inspired her to apply for a Fulbright. \u201cMuch of what we learn at Dickinson emphasizes global perspectives and intercultural understanding, and immersing myself in another country will allow me to put those values into practice. It will push me out of my comfort zone, help me become more adaptable, and give me the chance to engage with different communities firsthand.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Gabriel McGough \u201925<\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"float_right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/images\/Gabe_McGough_edit.jpg\" alt=\"Gabe mcgough\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Gabriel McGough &#8217;25 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/104\/policy_studies\">law &amp; policy<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/101\/german\">German<\/a>)\u00a0will serve as an ETA in Germany. McGough\u2019s experiences as a paraeducator and his family\u2019s background in education inspired him to pursue the award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI plan to use what I\u2019ve learned at Dickinson, my teaching experience in Germany and my passion for public education to eventually pursue a career in educational law or advocacy,\u201d he says, noting that he&#8217;s long harbored a fascination with\u00a0international law. \u201cThis Fulbright opportunity is the cherry on top of my Dickinson experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Shannon Nolan &#8217;19<\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"float_right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/images\/Shannon_Nolan_edit.jpg\" alt=\"Shannon nolan\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Shannon Nolan &#8217;19 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/114\/international_studies\">international studies<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/126\/english\">English<\/a>)\u00a0also received an ETA award and will teach English in Belgium. She\u00a0visited Brussels for the first time while doing research for her M.Phil. dissertation at Trinity College Dublin, which included a study of\u00a0the global history of comic books. Now, five years later, she&#8217;s looking forward\u00a0to returning to continue exploring the area&#8217;s rich comics history while learning how to teach English as an additional language at the university level.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have used both parts of my degree in every position I have held since graduating,&#8221; says Nolan, noting that Associate Professor of English\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/site\/custom_scripts\/dc_faculty_profile_index.php?fac=kershs\">Sarah Kersh<\/a>\u00a0was invaluable during the Fulbright application process. &#8220;I would not have this opportunity without Dr. Kersh. I graduated from Dickinson six years ago and maintain that how deeply the professors care about their students is what sets the college apart.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Tara Fischer &#8217;02<\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"float_right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/images\/Tara_Fischer_edit.jpg\" alt=\"Tara fischer\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Tara Fischer &#8217;02, Dickinson\u2019s associate provost for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/62\/academic_advising_and_student_success\">student success\u00a0&amp; academic advising<\/a>, received a Fulbright U.S. International Education Administrators Award. She will join a seminar in Germany designed for leaders in international education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thrilled to have this opportunity to learn from Germany\u2019s forward-thinking approach to skillset development, digital education and access to higher ed,\u201d Fischer says. \u201cIt\u2019s a chance to explore how institutions like Dickinson can be both impacted by and contribute to global educational innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fischer, a first-generation college student who never had the chance to study abroad as a student, sees this opportunity as deeply personal and professionally meaningful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the course of my career, Dickinson has given me the runway to grow, make connections and think strategically about how to improve the student experience,\u201d she says. &#8220;I work with students and encourage them to reach higher and to see possibilities for themselves they never could have imagined. This is that for me. I have always dreamed of an opportunity like this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>A Dickinson Strength<\/h3>\n<p>The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study, research and teaching projects in more than 140 countries.
