Kevin Doyle \u201916 will study Azerbaijani and Chase Philpot \u201914 will study Russian through the U.S. Department of State\u2019s Critical Language Scholarship (CLS), which sends just 550 undergraduate and graduate students abroad each year to study one of a dozen under-represented languages spoken by American officials.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>KEVIN DOYLE \u201916:\u00a0LANGUAGE AS A CULTURAL TIE<\/h3>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-size: 14px;line-height: 1.5em\" alt=\"kevin Doyle '16\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/images\/Kevin_Photo396h.jpg\" \/><\/h3>\n<p>A double-major in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/homepage\/131\/russian\" target=\"_blank\">Russian<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0international studies, Doyle will make his first trip to Azerbaijan this summer, after traveling twice to Russia through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowing a second language is good, but I was hoping to add to that, and I chose Azerbaijani because it&#8217;s a great complement to Russian,\u201d he says, explaining that the two languages have cultural ties, since Azerbaijan was once a part of the Soviet Union. \u201cThere are many Russian speakers in Azerbaijan and vice versa, and I\u2019m interested to see what Russian influence remains there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After completing the summer program, Doyle will spend his junior year as an exchange student in Moscow. He envisions an international career that will allow him to continue to travel and learn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s nothing quite as thrilling as starting to learn a new language,&#8221; says Doyle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Chase Philpot &#8217;14: Fortuitous restlessness<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Chase Philpot '14\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/images\/chase_philpot_in_bulgaria440.jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe third time is the charm, they say,\u201d says Philpot, a double major in\u00a0Russian and\u00a0Middle East studies, whose passion for languages inspired him to apply for the award three times before receiving word that he would be studying Russian in Kazan next summer as a Critical Language Scholar. Soon after, he will travel to Bulgaria to teach high-school or college English in Bulgaria as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant.<\/p>\n<p>Philpot believes that his unique double-major pairing\u2014combined with his experiences studying Islam in the Middle East and studying\u00a0abroad in Russia, where he\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dickinson.edu\/news\/article\/236\/a_very_russian_experience\" target=\"_blank\">played in a national lacrosse tournament<\/a>\u2014provided a solid foundation for his continuing study of Muslims in Russia and distinguished him in this year&#8217;s pool of more than 5,500 CLS applicants.
