{"id":1251,"date":"2018-10-30T17:41:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T21:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/?p=1251"},"modified":"2018-10-30T17:41:10","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T21:41:10","slug":"fancy-me-a-cup-of-three-will-ya-please","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/2018\/10\/30\/fancy-me-a-cup-of-three-will-ya-please\/","title":{"rendered":"Fancy me a cup of three will ya please?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">While reading Dracula by Bram Stoker there has been some <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"AdvancedProofingIssue SCXW137417781\">really <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"AdvancedProofingIssue SCXW137417781\">interesting<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\"> points being made about 19th\u00a0century culture being <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">portrayed<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\"> in the writing and how social roles are being changed in the book and during the time period as well. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">However,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">\u00a0one <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">aspect<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\"> of the book has always <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">intrigued<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\"> me from the start and that is the fact that there are three \u201cwitches\u201d that Jonathan Harker meets <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">towards<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\"> the end of chapter three. I found this very exciting because in one of my favorite plays, Macbeth by William\u00a0Shakespeare. In this play there\u2019re three witches that lure Macbeth into a quite a horrible person. I get a sense that this will be the case in Dacula because of the first interaction that Jonathan had with them. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">However,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\"> putting <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">aside,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\"> the characters for a moment I wanted to focus on the number three for a second. I did some <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">research<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\"> into why the number three comes up in writing a lot and wheat I found <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">intrigued<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">\u00a0me. The number three represents in <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">some cultures<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\"> a <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">beginning<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">, a <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">middle, and<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">an<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\"> end but what I found most important is the fact that some cultures believe that humans have a spirit, a soul, and a body. After reading this I completely understand why in a text like Dracula and Macbeth why a writer might have the antagonist of the story to have something to do with three because not only could you hide the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">character<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">\u00a0in three personalities you could have three different horrific events lead up to a final problem, like a beginning middle and an end. The possibilities are <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">numerous<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">. I\u2019m very <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW137417781\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137417781\">excited to see how this book plays out in terms of using the number three.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While reading Dracula by Bram Stoker there has been some really interesting points being made about 19th\u00a0century culture being portrayed in the writing and how social roles are being changed in the book and during the time period as well.
