Phoebe\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">shrieks<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">\u00a0at Luke to put\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">the bracelet down, and when he says that \u201c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">one of those diamond things would set us up in life, Phoebe<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">,\u201d she responds by saying, \u201chow can you speak about such things,\u201d but in the end, Phoebe is the one that goes against her morals and takes something from the chest. Not only does Phoebe steal from the chest, but instead of stealing a diamond piece, that is\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">valuable, while also\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">replaceable<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">, Phoebe decides to take the belongings of a child, which I as<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">sume is more treasured by the family than the diamonds. I thought this passage pertained to the theme I have\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">observed throughout the novel so far, which is the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">differences<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">\u00a0between appearances and reality. In multiple cases we see people performing an act to seem like a genuine, or\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">exceptional person, when\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">they<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">\u00a0can be malicious and devious. I saw this with George Talboys, how he speaks about the pure love he held for his wife and how he\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">basically kissed the ground she walked on, but when we read about their relationship before he left, the author talks about thes<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">e rages that he would go into,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">showing how his actions contradict the things he says, which I see in this passage with Phoebe.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\"> When Luke first opens this draw, Phoebe mutters, \u201cSo this is what my lady hides in the secret drawer,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">\u201d this use of the words hides, se<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">cret, and mutters all\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">refer to the theme of appearance versus reality<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">. In this instance the vocabulary is used to describe Phoebe\u2019s lady as well, showing that there are multiple\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">characters<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">\u00a0that we\u2019ve\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">meet<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">\u00a0so\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">far,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW125856330 BCX0\">\u00a0that connect to this theme.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW125856330 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Paragraph starting with &#8220;Why, one of those diamond things would set us up in life, Phoebe,&#8221; and ending with &#8220;you shall have the public-house, Luke.&#8221; (34) I think this passage\u00a0exposes the idea of preaching morality, but then turning around and doing the opposite for your own gain.
