When reading the beginning of the passage, I sympathized with Lucy when Braddon explains her misfortunes during her \u201cbabyhood.\u201d\u00a0 She even insists that Sir Michael could have any other women much more superior than herself, but he chose her.\u00a0 However, we later see Lucy\u2019s materialistic motivations become a contributing factor to her decision later.<\/p>\n
I believe this passage is explaining the idea of love and status through Lucy\u2019s reaction to Sir Michael\u2019s proposal. \u00a0\u00a0Throughout the passage, Lucy makes a lot of words that can contrast between the idea of poverty and beauty; accomplished but poor.\u00a0 The passage also uses \u201cyou\u201d and \u201cwe\u201d in a way to explain that Sir Michael will never be able to relate to her life.\u00a0 Thus, being impossible for her to really fall in love with him even though he would help rescue her from poverty, \u201cyou <\/em>cannot tell; you, who are amongst those for whom life is so smooth and easy; can never guess what is endured by such as we,\u201d (Braddon 16).\u00a0 Lucy also repeats the lines, \u201cyou ask too much of me,\u201d in the beginning of the passage.\u00a0 However, she later changes the wording to, \u201cDo not ask too much of me, then,\u201d (Braddon 16) after she explains her upbringing of poverty.\u00a0 This can imply that when Lucy accepted his proposal, she wasn\u2019t hiding that some of her decision was based on his wealth and luxurious lifestyle.
