In the beginning chapters of the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">novel,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\"> we are introduced to three young women who seduce o<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">ur protagonist, Jonathan Harker. The women<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\"> are<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">intensely<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\"> sexual and predatory in their pursuit of Harker.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">\u201cThere was somethin<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">g about them that made me uneasy, some longing and at the same time some deadly fear\u201d (Stoker 13<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">).<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">I<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">t\u2019s<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">a strange contradictory description which perfectly encapsulates <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">Harker&#8217;s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\"> reluctance to give into their glamor. \u201cThere was a deliberate voluptuousness which was both thrilling and repulsive\u201d (Stoker<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\"> 14)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">The danger of these women is<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\"> conveyed through their wolfish sensual behavior that is both terrifying and enticing<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">. It not only heightens the stakes <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">but cultivates an interesting <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">dynamic between <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">Dracula and Harker since Drac<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">ula shares in their lustful history. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">\u201cHow dare you touch him, any of you? How dare you cast eyes on him when I had <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">forbidden<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\"> it? Back, I tell you all! This man b<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">elongs to me! Beware how you meddle with him, or <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">y<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">ou\u2019ll<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">deal with me\u201d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\"> (Stoker 15)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">This moment confirms the hierarchy that exists between the women and Dracula while also displaying a growing possessiveness over <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">his prisoner Johnathan Harker. It is only after <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">w<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">itnessing<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">the terror of the women that we can truly recognize <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">Dracula&#8217;s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\"> dominance. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">It\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\"> an important moment for understanding Dracula but it also creates a juxtaposition between these women and then Lucy and Mina who the reader can n<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">ow identify as protagonists<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">\u201cLucy always wakes prettily, and even at such a time, when her body must have been chilled with cold, and her m<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">ind somewhat appalled at waking unclad in a churchyard at night, she did not lose her grace\u201d (Stoker 79)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">It\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\"> impossible not to draw a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\"> comparison drawn between Lucy and Dracula&#8217;s brides<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\"> when <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">looking at the descriptors of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW28094996 BCX4\">the two of them.
