At first the title of the poem seems unrelated to the poem itself, but I believe that Rossetti may be\u00a0describing how she views \u201cThe World\u201d or society. In particular, I think that <em>The World<\/em> serves as an allegory for the experience of a woman growing up in Victorian society. The attractions of participating in society such as companionship, status, and respect are represented in the poem as \u201cripe fruit, sweet flowers\u201d and the promise of \u201cfull satiety.\u201d The gaining of these attractions is contingent upon acceptance which in turn is contingent on conformity to societal expectations. As the narrator starts to realize this, they see the beautiful woman \u201cin the naked horror of the truth:\u201d \u201cLoathsome and foul with hideous leprosy And subtle serpents gliding in her hair.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0The narrator engages in an internal debate between giving themselves up to the woman or turning their back on all she has to offer. If the narrator wants to gain access to the fruits of society, they must first become what society expects of them. By\u00a0conforming to societal expectations, the narrator\u00a0has to \u201csell My soul to her, give her my life and youth Till my feet, cloven too, take hold on hell.\u201d Once a woman has sacrificed her freedom, independence, and ability to support herself, she may become accepted as the ideal presentable woman and go onto uphold the societal expectations that she may have once abhorred.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Christina Rossetti\u2019s The World tells the story of the narrator being wooed by a woman who in daylight seems beautiful but by night transforms into a devilish creature.
