{"id":752,"date":"2017-09-28T09:43:17","date_gmt":"2017-09-28T13:43:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/?p=752"},"modified":"2017-11-30T11:45:26","modified_gmt":"2017-11-30T16:45:26","slug":"sacred-spaces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/2017\/09\/28\/sacred-spaces\/","title":{"rendered":"Sacred Spaces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8220;I hereby commend you, and I counsel you by way of caution to forbear from crossing the moor in those dark hours when the powers of evil are exalted.&#8221;\u00a0 (Doyle, 16)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>So far in my reading of The Hound of the Baskervilles, <\/em>I have come across the Gothic trope of the uncanny.\u00a0 From the very beginning of the novel, Doyle made the reader aware of some supernatural powers lurking in the plot which has already caught my attention.\u00a0 When viewed through this Gothic lens, I already see many parallel&#8217;s in the text between <em>The Hound of the Baskervilles <\/em>and <em>Lady Audley&#8217;s Secret<\/em>.\u00a0 However, one that really stood out to me is how both novels introduced early on a sort of sacred space that is mentioned to make the reader uneasy.\u00a0 At the very end of the manuscript read by Dr. Mortimer in chapter two, it is mentioned that no member of the Baskerville family shall cross the moor after dark.\u00a0 This poses many questions to the reader.\u00a0 What lies beyond the moor?\u00a0 What shall happen if one crosses the moor gate?\u00a0 I think this introduction to such a space is a foreshadowing moment that maybe some of the answers are found there.\u00a0 It leaves the reader with many questions but also seems to set the scene for this underlying supernatural theme the author plans to delve into further in the novel.<\/p>\n<p>This parallels <em>Lady Audley&#8217;s Secret<\/em> because in the very first chapter of the novel, the narrator speaks of a lime-tree walk, &#8220;an avenue so shaded from the sun and sky, so screened from observation by the thick shelter of the over-arching trees, that it seemed a chosen place fro secret meetings or for stolen interviews; a place in which a conspiracy might have been planned or a lover&#8217;s vow registered with equal safety; and yet it was scarcely twenty paces from the house&#8221; (Braddon, 9).\u00a0 Both the moor from <em>The Hound of the Baskervilles<\/em> and the lime-tree walk introduce the reader to this mysterious place not far from the main setting of each novel and as we find out later in <em>Lady Audley&#8217;s Secret<\/em>, the walk is where the reader finds the answers to the main mystery.\u00a0 Which makes one wonder, what will Holmes and Watson find lying beyond the gates of the moor?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;I hereby commend you, and I counsel you by way of caution to forbear from crossing the moor in those dark hours when the powers of evil are exalted.&#8221;\u00a0 (Doyle, 16) &nbsp; So far in my reading of The Hound of the Baskervilles, I have come across the Gothic trope of the uncanny.\u00a0 From the &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/2017\/09\/28\/sacred-spaces\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Sacred Spaces<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3627,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[123801],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-752","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-2017-blog-post"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/752","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3627"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=752"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/752\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=752"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=752"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/secretlives\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=752"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
