{"id":90,"date":"2014-08-27T15:53:03","date_gmt":"2014-08-27T15:53:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/seminar-digitalhumanities\/?page_id=90"},"modified":"2014-10-13T13:07:40","modified_gmt":"2014-10-13T13:07:40","slug":"topic-8-plagiarism-2-0","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/seminar-digitalhumanities\/reading-topics-2\/topic-8-plagiarism-2-0\/","title":{"rendered":"Topic 8: Plagiarism 2.0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Plagiarism has always been a problem. \u00a0Sometimes people steal other peoples&#8217; words and ideas. \u00a0More often they just take shortcuts, ignoring\u00a0established\u00a0procedures for acknowledgements and just hoping that if they do end up getting\u00a0caught, they can just plead ignorance and apologize.<\/p>\n<p>But the scope and dimensions of the problems are inherently more troubling in a digital age. In fact, they are so different that it is even possible that the definition of plagiarism might soon change. \u00a0That is the underlying question lurking\u00a0behind a fascinating piece which appeared this past summer in <em>Salon <\/em>called, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2012\/08\/14\/cut_paste_plagiarize\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Cut, Paste, Plagiarize.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0 Author Michael Barthel, a graduate student at the University of Washington, used a recent plagiarism scandal concerning CNN&#8217;s Fareed Zakaria, as a springboard to compare old ethics versus new ethics. \u00a0&#8220;Everything on the Internet gets stolen,&#8221; he writes\u00a0meaning not that it&#8217;s really theft, but rather that it&#8217;s part of what many are now calling a &#8220;remix culture.&#8221; \u00a0Barthel is not necessarily celebrating this shift, but he is describing something that seems almost irreversible. \u00a0&#8220;<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Web, and the generation who grew up with it,&#8221; he observes, &#8220;<\/span>think about plagiarism very differently<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0than do the keepers of journalistic ethics.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That was exactly the point made by a young &#8220;Generation Y&#8221; columnist for the\u00a0<em>Christian Science Monitor\u00a0<\/em>in 2010. \u00a0In her piece about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/Commentary\/Opinion\/2010\/0219\/Posner-Kouwe-and-Hegemann-old-school-vs.-new-school-attitudes-about-plagiarism\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Old-School Versus New-School Attitudes on Plagiarism,&#8221; <\/a>Sara Libby describes the indifferent reaction of 17-year-old German novelist to accusations that she copied an entire passages of someone else&#8217;s work in her debut novel<em>. <\/em>\u00a0Helene Hegemann, the young novelist, simply commented that, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThere\u2019s no such thing as originality anyway, just authenticity.&#8221; \u00a0According to Libby, that&#8217;s a by-product of younger people like her (and you) growing up in the age of web 2.0, crowd-sourcing, and Wikipedia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plagiarism has always been a problem. \u00a0Sometimes people steal other peoples&#8217; words and ideas. \u00a0More often they just take shortcuts, ignoring\u00a0established\u00a0procedures for acknowledgements and just hoping that if they do end up getting\u00a0caught, they can just plead ignorance and apologize.
