On October 24, 2014, two dozen students participated in a special free dance clinic organized by Dickinson Professor Akiko Meguro and taught by maestro of Cuban traditional popular dance, Yoel Marrero.
Marrero was born and raised in Matanzas, Cuba and currently lives in Miami, FL. He is a worldly renowned dancer and instructor of Traditional Cuban popular dances such as Danzon, Son, Chachacha, Casino and Rueda de Casino. His online dance course has subscribers from all over the world.
The word “Salsa” has only been used recently to describe this popular Cuban dance. Cubans call the popular dance form that originated in the 70’s “Casino.” And before that, the popular dances were variations on the form known as “Son.”
