Films by young Cuban directors have long expressed the need for greater equality related to gender and sexuality. On September 25th, 2022, Cuba approved a new Families Code that allows same-sex partners to marry and adopt children.
Come join us tonight for a discussion of the controversy leading up to the referendum and how the works of young filmmakers promote the changes they wish to see in society. Associate Professor Margaret Frohlich of Spanish and Portuguese Studies will lead the discussion, which relates to her forthcoming book on sexual diversity in Cuban young cinema. Film shorts are in Spanish (English subtitles are not available).
