Mysterious sightings were reported last week of a Don Quixote look-alike on campus. “El Quixote” was sighted in the HUB and the library, handing out bookmarks and telling everyone about the Día del Libro: Cervantes’s Don Quixote reading event coming up this week.
On Wednesday, April 23, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese will host a 12-hour readathon of Cervantes’s Don Quixote in celebration of World Book Day.
In 1995, UNESCO designated April 23 as World Book Day to honor books and authors and to encourage everyone to read. This date is significant to many important authors and is also the date that Miguel de Cervantes died. In many Spanish-speaking countries, readers participate in a two-day “readathon,” an event that features a continuous reading of Cervantes’s masterpiece Don Quixote.
This Wednesday, students and faculty will read aloud from Don Quixote continuously from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. In addition to Spanish, excerpts will be read in several other languages. All are welcome!
